WEBVTT 00:30.000 --> 00:59.760 Well, funnily enough, The Savages is a 00:59.760 --> 01:04.120 serial that I have very slight memories of and it's surprising I suppose because 01:04.120 --> 01:08.960 it's the serial in which I left and consequently you think well it's the one 01:08.960 --> 01:12.960 that's most recent therefore I'm likely to remember it. I do remember one or two 01:12.960 --> 01:17.120 things about it. I remember Chris Barry the director who was terrific. I liked 01:17.120 --> 01:21.080 Chris immensely, he was lovely. I also remember that he cast the most glorious 01:21.080 --> 01:27.800 girl in it called Claire Jenkins who had legs to die for. She was just gorgeous. 01:27.800 --> 01:33.120 I remember her very well indeed. I remember Freddy Yeager, he was a nice guy and a 01:33.120 --> 01:38.640 good actor. The character was called Jano. I can remember very little about it. I 01:38.640 --> 01:43.560 can remember hardly anything of the story except that I left the series 01:43.560 --> 01:49.000 there and I was written out. Innes Lloyd, in his great wisdom, he'd done one great 01:49.000 --> 01:54.360 change of course. He decided that the episodes, individual episodes, would be 01:54.360 --> 01:57.960 numbered instead of having titles. I mean what an innovation that was. My god, he 01:57.960 --> 02:02.360 probably was promoted immediately following that. But he also decided that 02:02.360 --> 02:09.680 he wasn't going to keep the companions for longer than a year. Didn't quite work 02:09.680 --> 02:13.400 out like that. I think Fraser stayed a lot longer than a year but anyway I had to 02:13.400 --> 02:17.480 leave. I'd been in it a year and he wanted to replace me and he replaced me with 02:17.480 --> 02:22.560 Michael Craze which is fair enough. It's his decision. I wasn't happy about it. 02:22.560 --> 02:27.400 The first I knew about it was four weeks before I actually left was that my 02:27.400 --> 02:32.720 contract was not being renewed. And unfortunately the BBC did that to people 02:32.720 --> 02:36.800 in those days. They didn't give you a lot of warning. Maureen O'Brien came back 02:36.800 --> 02:42.240 from holiday, summer holiday, to record the serial called The Myth Makers which 02:42.240 --> 02:47.000 was a brilliant serial. And when she read the scripts she discovered that she left 02:47.000 --> 02:51.240 in episode 4. She didn't know. She hadn't been told. So she discovered it via 02:51.240 --> 02:54.520 script. I was actually told and they stuck me on one side and said, 02:54.520 --> 02:58.440 I'm afraid Peter we're not going to renew your contract. No reason given, just 02:58.440 --> 03:03.160 that. So it was either I was a terrible actor or it was just Innes Lloyd's whim. 03:03.160 --> 03:11.720 Anyway, that aside, I do know that the planet where the savages were needed 03:11.720 --> 03:16.760 someone to take control and run things for them. And I was going to be a nice 03:16.760 --> 03:22.920 benevolent leader. And I was left on the planet in a very happy state to be the 03:22.920 --> 03:27.800 leader of what were the savages. And of course we ended up being a wonderful crowd. 03:27.800 --> 03:33.240 I've always rather wished that perhaps we could have another serial which 03:33.240 --> 03:38.640 starts with the Tardis arriving on this planet shortly after I've taken over. And 03:38.640 --> 03:42.240 I've been an absolute bastard and ruined it all. But there we go. I think we're 03:42.240 --> 03:46.040 making a great serial. But we'll never know. It will probably never happen. But 03:46.040 --> 03:48.680 I'd like it. 03:52.240 --> 03:59.400 The Tardis materialises in a rocky ravine on a distant planet. Excited, the 03:59.400 --> 04:03.920 Doctor proclaims that for once he knows exactly where they are. He informs his 04:03.920 --> 04:07.640 companions that they've arrived at an age of great peace and prosperity. However, 04:07.640 --> 04:16.640 as they soon discover, things are not quite how they seem.
