And now the final piece is in the hands of the Doctor. Destroy Daleks! The Daleks Masterplan was the first Doctor's last encounter with his deadliest enemies. But Dalek creator Terry Nation planned to take the Daleks solo in their own series. Devised, written and produced by himself. With this he hoped to make his mark in the television industry. As far back as Tuesday the 3rd of August 1965, Nation had mentioned the idea of a spin-off series to the Sun newspaper. During May 1966, only four months after Masterplan finished airing on BBC1, a provisional agreement was reached between Nation's company, Linstead Film Productions Ltd, and the BBC to collaborate equally on a filmed television series entitled The Daleks. Throughout 1967, Nation attempted to secure backing for the series from an American network, notably NBC. However, the two amicus Dalek films had performed badly in America, and the Doctor's TV incarnation had yet to reach American shores. Factors that effectively sealed the fate of the spin-off series. The pilot episode was entitled The Destroyers, and charted the adventures of a band of Space Security Service agents, like those seen in Mission to the Unknown and The Daleks Masterplan. Indeed, an integral character was Sara Kingdom. And it seems likely Nation would have asked Gene Marsh to reprise this role, as he greatly admired her performance in Masterplan. Other characters were to be Mark Seven, a humanoid robot as Nation calls him, Captain Jason Corey, and Sara's brother David Kingdom. With many appearances in the Dalek annuals of the 60s and 70s, Mark Seven remains The Destroyers' most enduring legacy. But join us now as we construct a brief overview of the episode that could have been. The Destroyers Oh, Tom, concerning you, I thought I heard something. Carson, relax will you? That force field goes around the whole compound, nothing can get through. There is something out there. What's going on out there? We're under attack! Attack! Destroy! Exterminate! Captain Jason Corey of the Space Security Service and his comrades David Kingdom and Mark Seven survey the destruction. David is worried about his sister Sarah and he and Mark Seven clash over her possible fate. Quiet! Both of you! Attacked! Killed! Carson! Tom! Wayne! Killed them! Took prisoners! Took prisoners! Attacked! Report! A fight base is prepared. Two prisoners killed. All other humans exterminated. The prisoners revealed nothing of value. Only one prisoner is required. Exterminate the inmates! Murderers! Murderers! Mark Seven, Jason Corey and David Kingdom detect the approaching patrol and hide in bushes. However, the bushes are carnivorous at attack. They cannot fight. All the Dalek patrol will hear, but Mark Seven makes a noise. Corey and David free themselves with their knives, but Mark Seven has been damaged. The blast has fused one of his solenoids. Jason repairs it. Disarmament initiated killing. Watch for the Daleks barrel momentum. Control. and you will be exterminated! Keeping ahead of the Dalek patrol, David, Corey and Seven, following Dalek tracks on the jungle floor, reach the cave entrance. David stays to watch for the patrol, while Corey and Mark head deeper into the caves. Mark speculates about what lies ahead. A creature considered by the ancients to be a force of total evil. They called them the Daleks, he says. A chasm halts their progress just as David arrives. Take cover! The patrol is close behind. They take cover. Assistance required! The patrol is close behind. Only one prisoner is required! No... You are a fear prisoner! You know nothing of value! No! Dalek saucer, prepare for launch! Switch all base systems to automatic. This base must continue to function! I obey! Base one completed! The destruction of Earth and its colony worlds is assured! The Daleks will dominate your galaxy! Nothing in the universe can halt our progress! Nothing! Nothing! Nothing! Nothing! The Daleks! David is delighted to see Sara alive. The SSS men blow the control doors. The room is deserted. The Daleks have gone, taking Sara with them. The ship, they discover, is on its way to begin the invasion and destruction of Earth. The Daleks conquer and destroy!
