WEBVTT 01:00.000 --> 01:06.400 Mission to the Unknown was transmitted on the 9th of October 1965. 01:06.400 --> 01:10.200 It was sometimes called the Dalek Cutaway. 01:10.200 --> 01:15.200 Now, this episode is unique for several reasons. 01:15.200 --> 01:18.600 One, the most important of which, is that there was no Doctor Who. 01:18.600 --> 01:25.400 It's the only episode of Doctor Who with no Doctor Who, nor are there any of his companions. 01:25.400 --> 01:42.000 It was produced as a teaser for the 12-episode epic, which followed, starting about a month later. 01:42.000 --> 01:52.000 Now, it was filmed back-to-back with another story, the preceding story, Galaxy 4. 01:52.000 --> 02:01.000 And it also marked the last appearance as producer of Verity Lambert. 02:01.000 --> 02:08.200 Now, another curious thing about this episode is that it was never transmitted abroad, 02:08.200 --> 02:12.600 because it was thought to be far too violent. 02:12.600 --> 02:14.200 There was a great deal of killing. 02:14.200 --> 02:20.200 The Daleks, of course, were doing their dastardly deeds. 02:20.200 --> 02:25.200 And the place was infested by things called Varga plants. 02:25.200 --> 02:30.400 In fact, when I was at drama school some years before, there was an actor who was a little bit older than us, 02:30.400 --> 02:40.600 and he always played the big parts, and we all thought that he was the one who was going to be a star. 02:40.600 --> 02:45.200 Anyway, I was going up into the lift to the rehearsal room, and I saw him, and I said, 02:45.200 --> 02:51.200 Oh, hello, how are you? We chatted, and I said, Which floor are you going? He said, The same floor as me. 02:51.200 --> 02:55.200 And I said, Which rehearsal room? He said, It's the same one as me. 02:55.200 --> 03:00.200 So I said, Well, what are you playing? He said, Oh, I'm playing a Varga plant. 03:00.200 --> 03:07.200 Well, a Varga plant wasn't exactly Richard III or a great part. 03:07.200 --> 03:15.200 All you had to do was to stand and clothe yourself in an enormous green costume, 03:15.200 --> 03:21.200 looking rather like an overblown cactus, and wave your arms about. 03:21.200 --> 03:26.200 So that was his role. 03:26.200 --> 03:35.200 Also, it struck me as very curious, having been a fan of Doctor Who for years before, 03:35.200 --> 03:44.200 that the Daleks themselves didn't have their Dalek costume on. 03:44.200 --> 03:52.200 So all these Daleks were played by actors, all stooping about and twisting their things and going, 03:52.200 --> 03:58.200 choo, choo, choo, choo, which struck me as being highly comical. 03:58.200 --> 04:06.200 And after that, I was not quite as convinced about the menace of the Daleks as I had been when I had been a fan. 04:06.200 --> 04:13.200 Well, considering the limited quantity of material, Loose Cannon, the team, Loose Cannon, 04:13.200 --> 04:19.200 pulled together a really extraordinary representation of the story, 04:19.200 --> 04:25.200 which I reckon is pretty close to how it was when it first appeared on our screens. 04:25.200 --> 04:33.200 The episode begins with Mark, Corey, that's me, and the captain of the ship, 04:33.200 --> 04:38.200 and another member of the crew, Jeff Garvey, landing on this planet, 04:38.200 --> 04:43.200 well, crash landing on the planet, and we start to mend the ship. 04:43.200 --> 04:49.200 What we didn't realise is that Jeff Garvey has gone off wandering in the jungle, 04:49.200 --> 04:56.200 and he is spiked by a vaga plant, which of course is a disaster. 04:56.200 --> 05:05.200 It turns him into a homicidal maniac, with one idea in his head, which is to kill the other members of the crew. 05:05.200 --> 05:11.200 So, that's how it begins. 05:11.200 --> 05:23.200 So, sit back and have a look at Mission to the Unknown. Those of you who saw it originally will have a happy or frightening trip down memory lane, 05:23.200 --> 05:43.200 and those who have never seen it will have a very good idea of what it was like.
