The man who grabbed Barbara is not a soldier but an older man from the town. He introduces himself as Harun-ed-Din and tells her that al-Aqiyah is an enemy of his also. He will take her to the safety of his small dwelling. He decides to go out and check on the soldiers and as he leaves he gives Barbara his knife, telling her to hide his daughter Safiyyah and if there is a chance that they will be captured she should use his knife to kill them both. In King Richard's palace Joanna overhears Vicky complain about having to dress like a boy. Initially annoyed at the deceit she soon forgives them and offers to take Vicky under her wing. Joanna draws the doctor aside and asks him to find out why she has been excluded from the confidence of her brother the king as she senses that she is part of some plan on the part of the king. The doctor is called to an audience with the king and his advisors. During the meeting Richard explains his plan to marry Joanna to Safadin. Joanna soon discovers the plan and is furious. Richard, incensed, turns to the doctor and accuses him of giving away the plan. The doctor tries to protest but the king tells him that he is no longer welcome in the royal presence. In Saladin's palace the Sultan finishes reading King Richard's latest letter. Safadin is elated by the offer of marriage but Saladin is cautious. Saladin urges his brother to write a letter of acceptance while he prepares his army. Sir Ian's bravery in delivering the message is rewarded and he is allowed to search the Sultan's territory for Barbara. Unfortunately, en route to Lydda, Ian is attacked by a bandit and is knocked out. In Lydda two soldiers enter the house of Harun-ed-Din. Barbara emerges from hiding to prevent the house from being burnt, leaving Safia safely concealed. Barbara is arrested and brought before the Saracen warrior El-Akir. The Emir is bursting with pride and anger. Death, he tells her, is the only pleasure left for you and death is very far away. We rejoin the story for the final episode, The Warlords.
