millions watched from around the world. . >> good afternoon. i'm kimberly suit zblers i'm barbara harrison. jim and pat are off tonight. >> it has been a day to remember the king of pop. an estimated 20,000 people gathered at the staples center for an unprecedented public tribute to michael jackson. >> the day began early this morning with a private ceremony, family and close friends gathered for service at a cemetery in hollywood hills. about 30 minutes later, jackson's golden flower-draped casket was escorted to the staples center by motorcade good it was carried to the front of the stage as adoring fans who had won a lottery to be there looked on. jay gray has the latest. >> a long day of good-es began at memorial park. mike's family, including his three young children, joined by a small group of friends for a

breaking ♪ >> reporter: jay gray, nbc news. >> fans here in the d.c. metro area also paused today to remember michael jackson. many of them took a little time off work this afternoon to attend viewing parties to watch jackson's memorial service. one such viewing party was held at the sidelines sports bar in largo, maryland. fans say that they wanted to watch today's memorial with other jackson fans. >> he was the best, you know. i remember when they came to the capital. people were passing out. falling out, you know, passing. and he was -- he was untouchable. that's how i describe him. untouchable. >> he was a god. i mean, yeah. he was like that. >> reporter: former skron lavar arrington owns the restaurant and hosted today's event and we will have much more with him coming up on "news4 at 5:00." a washington art gallery has set up a tribute to the king of pop. the emma may gallery at the reid

center downtown will display jackson memorabilia in its window. it will be visible to fans and onlooker 24 hours a day. others watched the memorial for michael jackson's neverland ranch. a small group of people huddled around a big screen tv just outside the gates of the santa barbara estate. many of them cried and clapped along with mourners at the loss service. one 46-year-old woman said she drove there from arkansas. last week there was speculation neverland could be jackson's final resting place and become a new sort of graceland. as you can imagine the death of michael jackson and his memorial service today are making headlines across the u.s. and around the world. here's a look at the "l.a. times" website. the paper focused a lot of its website today on the funeral and traffic impact it was having on the roads and freeways around l.a. to london now and the daily telegraph. providing live minute by minute coverage of the memorial service and events leading up to it. that service happened in the early evening in england. most people were at home

different agencies took part to be prepared in the event of anna real emergency. riders can expect to be extra -- see extra police on the red line until 7:00 tonight. the district of columbia now officially recognizes gay marriages performed in other states. the gay marriage recognition bill which passed back in may became law at midnight. it is considered the first step towards eventually allowing gay marriages to be performed here in the district. in maryland governor martin o'malley said his state should respect same-sex marriages performed in other states. a newly released support suggests the waters of the chesapeake bay are polluted and dangerous. the chesapeake bay foundation claims that more people are getting sick from dangerous bacteria becoming more widespread in the bay and the foundation blames global warming and nutrient pollution. the foundation's president faults the envonmental protection agency for failing to clean up the bay.

what a great day we had out there. it is a on the warm side and dry. let's see what veronica johnson tells us about tomorrow. good morning and the rest of the day. what will happen later today n. >> it has been a good afternoon, barbara. as promised slightly higher temperatures today. and up to 88 degrees here at news4. currently we are at 87 now at this hour. still again humidity still relatively comfortable across the area. new market, maryland, duntd 54 degrees. the relative humidity at 32% and our winds today have been very light. mainly out of the west. there's falls church, too, at 87 degrees throughout the area. our temperatures today in the mid 80s and we have had clouds drifting through with a weak weather front that's just to our north ask west. and pennsylvania, up into upstate new york, severe thunderstorm watch but not here and here just a few clouds for that next couple of hours. it is going to be a warm evening for us with just a few clouds sticking around up until midnight. temperatures will be easing through the mid 80s by about 6:00 and 7:00 and then into the

the bar. >> family, friends, berry gordy of motown celebrating the life of michael jackson. >> thanks, barbara. so many memories, for sure. >> exactly. >> they had great weather there. >> yes. and -- i mean, humid this morning. >> just a tad. as promised slightly higher temperatures, too. we are going to start cooling off a little bit because there is a weak weather system that will move through here during the next couple of hours. temperature right now is 87 degrees at reagan national air important. dew point at 50 5 2 degrees. 30% relative humidity, 20-some percent yesterday. light wind out of the west at 12 miles per hour. gusting to18. take a look at the radar. quiet throughout the entire area now. the front still north of us. tomorrow with the same weather system we could have a few isolated showers, i think, showing up down here around the northern neck. with that weather system doing today let's take a look up to the north because upstate new york, areas throughout new england again, not just showers but they have some thunderstorms

and severe thunderstorms at that. rolling through eastern new york, new hampshire, vermont, massachusetts, too, even down to areas of northern new jersey, where they have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 7:00 p.m. that had just as much severe weather up there as we had here. there is the weather front that crosses our area tonight and we will see a few clouds. doubtful we have any showers at all with it. and you can see more of those storms down through the south and there's another stalled-out weather system there. 87 degrees, the temperature here. 83, atlanta. 86, st. louis, missouri. 92, dallas. still the heat over the south and southern plains and areas of the southwest. and we have been so lucky this year without the stifling heat, we have only had three days that have been 90 degrees or higher. denver has had two. salt lake city, even salt lake city had eight. dallas, texas, has had 32 days with temperatures above 90 or higher. at least eight days that have been over 100 degrees. 89 is the temperature in arlington, virginia.

again still have to put the sun block on even when it feels comfortable out there. we will take a look at the 7-day forecast with what loo like a string of 90s coming up. pretty soon. kim? >> veronica. >> a lot of us missed the beautiful weather because we were inside watching the memorial to michael jackson. had you the privilege of meeting michael jackson. >> on several occasions. because of my interest in children's projects. he came to washington on a number of occasions and visited with some of the things i was doing for children. and i remember him as being a very gentle, very child-like man. a wonderful, wonderful person. i remember mostly of the last time i saw him which -- was just a year or so ago. he was here and deborah lee of bet gave a little party at her house for him and i took my daughter, who was really too young to have been part of his fan base, but he was so wonderful to her. he was so much more interested in talking to her as a child than the adults.

health, teen smoking. team sports cannot come pea with movies when it come to getting kids to kick the habit. studies have shown that participating in team sports like soccer reduce it is likelihood youngsters will become smokers. well, new research finds that movies can erase that positive effect. half of the adolescents in the study that smoked said they tried it after seeing movie characters do it and those teens who saw smoking in movies were more prone to start smoking themselves even if they played team sports. a diet rich in beans, whole grains, tofu may help lower blood pressure. that's according to new research from northwestern university. scientists there say a substance that was found in vegetable proteins are the key. the amino acid abundant in beans, whole grains. blood pressure was lower with higher dairy intake of the

here's the final closing numberses from wall street for this tuesday. stocks did take a hit. the dow is down 161 points. the nasdaq closed 41 points lower. and the new york stock exchange is off 115. back in the '50s the number of working women was around 18 million. today that number tops 68 million. a pay gap remains so experts say women have to be money smart. today's insider report, cnbc's carmen wong ulrich has money tips for women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. >> reporter: we have certainly come a long way but women are not equal to men when it comes to money. yet. women make up almost 50% of the american work force and yet we still only make 80 cents to the one dollar that men pull in. we received smaller social secure benefits. by 32%. which means we need to work more

and harder to achieve our financial goals. for women in your 20s, the best thing you can do for yourself is to not fall behind with debt. it can be easy to get into credit card debt with small salaries and desire for a big lifestyle. but most 20-somethings graduate with college with five figures of debt already. so manage your debt well. live within your means. and make sure to star investing in your employer's 401(k). if you have access to one, and/or a roth i.r.a. in your 30s and 40s, we have families and more obligations on our money but hopefully we are also earning more. it is more important than ever to balance your household budge tote make room for your future goals such as retirement. savings for retirement should be a big goal now. make sure you have life insurance. disability insuran and wills and trusts. if you have dependents. when you are in your 50s be careful to balance the demands of paying for your kids' college and funding your retirement. your retirement needs to come first. because you can borrow for school but you shun be borrowing as a senior. play catchup if you need to but

time to take a look at stories making news on the web today. police near modesto, california are investigating what some say is one of the lowest types of crimes imaginable. they are looking for a guy that stole a statue of the virgin mary from a church. as you can see in this surveillance video the man topple it is statue outside of the church and then comes back to steal it. the man is still on the loose. one of the children who starred in "slum dog millionaire" has a new home after the last one was demolished by the government. he and his family moved into their new home today. this one has four solid walls, doors, a lock and indoor plumbing. the last one had walls made out

of corrugated metal. there seems to be a final decision reached in the case of the barbecue mannequin and thank goodness for that. this doll is the mascot of the barbecue restaurant in reading, ohio. the owner put the mannequin outside to help attract business. when he attracted was a lawsuit. a lower court ruled that the doll had to be covered up. but last night an appeals court overturned that decision and that means the busty barbecue mannequin will be back out in front. hundreds of people in spain got quite a rush today but this rush isn't for everybody. 2 tloungers and half dozen bulls dashed through the streets for the annual running of the bulls. they ran together in a pack knocking over anything and anyone in their path. accordinto the red cross, one person was gored and four others were treated for minor injuries. this is the first of eight runs.
