>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning everyone. it's 4 o'clock on this wednesday march seventh and we're on a half hour early as much of the area is under a winter storm warning. >> right now a rain and snow mix has been falling for hours, snow already sticking to the ground and a lot more of that stuff is on the way. we're timing it all out for. >> all philadelphia public and archdiocesan schools are closed today. there are hundreds of others across the region scrolling at the bottom of your screen and also on 6abc.com. >> we have team coverage with a look at conditions around our area but we're going to get started with meteorologist karen rogers who is in for dave murphy and matt pelman who is watching the roads.

good morning. >> good morning. we've braced ourselves. >> we have. now here we go and the morning commute is not the worst of it that we're seeing right now so you really need to be careful later in the day if you think you're going to venture out now. let's take a look at storm tracker6 live 3-d. we can see the storm system just beginning to take shape. this is just the beginning of the precipitation that we're seeing building along the coastline. there's a lot of moisture to work with from down the south you're going to pull in moisture from the ocean so we're going to have a significant amount of moisture and therefore some very heavy snowfall throughout much of the day. so this is a high impact event. it peaks in the daytime today t so although we're seeing precipitation now it really peaks later on today. the heaviest snow will continue to fall north and west. the strongest winds will be at the coastline. let's talk about what we expect with this storm system. the national weather service has upgraded this winter storm warning until 3 a.m. on thursday and you can see now it includes burlington county, camden, gloucester county, salem county as well as

philadelphia and areas north and west. so, that's the winter storm warning for where we foresee this heavy snow. storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we have fairly light snowfall throughout much of the region. there are a couple areas of lavender picking up a little bit and you have mixed precipitation down to the south but this is all really just the beginning. the snow will be heavy and wet which means it's hard to shovel and remove. it will stick to trees and wires. we see the potential for additional power outages. i know that's particularly tough for people who just got back their power from the last nor'easter. so, we'll walk through this and talk about the totals which haven't changed a lot since yesterday. details on that in a few minutes, matt. >> all righty, karen. it's bound to be an interesting dane it's an interesting start this morning but the good news is most of the roadways even the secondary roads are still just wet at this point. going out to coatesville chester county we see the snow coming down here along business 30 lincoln highway at bailey road a especially as you go to make the turn but the maple travel lanes of business 30 are just

wet at this point. these roads have been treated. we're looking live now insçoo7yç northeast philadelphia and visibilities are down a bit because of the snow and rain that's falling. but this is the scene along 95 near cottman avenue and at this point again just wet southbound taillights are moving at an okay clip heading down towards center city. plymouth meeting and a live look at the mid-county toll plaza along 476 t-the blue route and then northeast extension. we had a crash on the northbound side of the northeast extension approaching lansdale but they just got that cleared out of the way. live look at our were buddy ben, the ben franklin bridge and it's wet this morning. speed restrictions in place on many of the area bridges but traffic is moving fine. not so good though coming off the tacony-palmyra bridge along 73 at 130. we've got downed wires all southbound lanes blocked, northbound just a little bit of traffic is getting by and in brooklawn it's more tidal flooding this morning blocking a lane each way along 130 near 47. that caused delays yesterday. we expect them again on this

wednesday, tam. >> okay, thank you, matt. now let's go over to "action news" reporter jeanette reyes who is live in montgomeryville montgomery county. jeanette what does it look like there?

>> all parked cars must be moved off snow emergency routes. all municipal offices in philadelphia and courts are

closed today and a state of emergency has also been declared in other parts of pennsylvania and in the state of new jersey. >> well, traveling on one of those snow emergency routes you need to get your cars off of, this is north broad street heading up towards north philadelphia and you see a lot of cars have been taken off or moved off of this road so that's good news. just rain here in philadelphia but that could change along with many other parts of the region. going to see more and more snow as the nor'easter moves through. "action news" reporter bob brooks gives us a live look in havertown, delaware county. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, matt. and just like everyone has been saying all morning, it is thick, wet heavy snow and we're seeing it come down at a pretty steady rate right now. behind me you can see the "action news" measuring stick. we're going to keep that out here all morning just to gauge where we're at as it continues to come down right now. about 3-inch center city what we're seeing. you can see how this snow sticks to everything. all of the tree branches,

power lines when peoplesgo outside it's going to look like a winter wonderland because it is sticking to everything. i know we just had the storm on friday. a lot of tree limbs came down because they were getting heavy stuck with this kind of snow and so hopefully that doesn't happen during this storm but we're just getting started and you can see at this point already so early in the morning everything's coated here. i'm going to get down here and just show you how easily some of this snow can pack right here. one handed perfect snowball, guys, so really thick heavy snow. it's going to be on your cars, all over your property, things like that. i'm going to sound repetitive here but it's going to be heavy to remove so make sure you have the proper form and conditioning. make sure you're keeping track of yourself when you're out there working on removing this stuff but out here in havertown pretty steady t roads getting slippery, getting slushy at this point. we've seen some plow trucks but certainly we have the beginning of a snowstorm out here. reporting live in havertown, bob brooks channel6 "action news." >> okay, thank you, bob.

penndot crews have been on the move all night. the action cam spotted several plow trucks along i-95 northbound in delaware county. there were more than 400 trucks out salting and plowing. the wet snow combined with high winds could pose another challenge for penndot crews and for others but they say they are prepared and they have enough salt. and airlines have already started canceling flights ahead of the storm. at last check nearly 2,000 flights have been canceled nationwide. some airlines are also offering fee waivers to or from certain cities on certain dates. and also be sure to check flight status with your airline before you come to the airport so you don't get out there in all of this for no good reason before you fly. >> this is what it looked like about an hour ago in ardmore, montgomery county. you see the roads are little slushy. and the snow is sticking to the trees and the sidewalks. in haddonfield, camden county, only a little bit of the snow was sticking when the action cam stopped by this morning. some parts of the region are

seeing more rain than snow but that will likely change as this nor'easter charges up later this morning. >> when i stepped out this morning, karen, i was a little -- i mean i knew it was coming but when you see the snow out there already it looked like a couple of inches and you're like here we go. >> yeah, this is just the beginning. i mean, this isn't too bad to travel in. it's kind of slushy. just take it easy but later in the day as the storm really intensifies it's going to pull down its own cold air and that's when we're going hit a little harder. let's take a look at storm tracker6 live double scan and you can see precipitation blanketing most of the region. as matt and tam mentioned we see it's rain south and east of the city. go in a little closer with storm tracker and show you some of the areas of lavender showing that it's coming down pretty good right now near berlin, near malaga on route 55. you're kind of in and out of some snowfall in the city itself and it's a little heavy north of the city as you travel along i-95. so, be careful as you're headed out right now. let's go outside and show you what it looks like. the snow is sure coming down.

it looks kind of pretty as long as you can stay inside as sky6 looks live at city hall. we know this is a tough time for a lot of people who just got power restored and you're seeing this and you're thinking not looking so pretty to me. satellite and radar showing the beginning of the storm system t it's just really beginning. this is the original low that's transferring its energy to this coastal low that's riding right up the coastline and producing this nor'easter for us. and future tracker kind of times it out for us to show you what it's going to look like. this is a look at 8:30 this morning and we're seeing snowfall through much of the region. still that rain south and east and you see a little bit of blue, too, and a big concern that we'll be tracking is how much sleet mixes in on i-95. that's what will affect our numbers along the i-95 corridor but then we look at this afternoon and the snow is really coming down heavily as the storm is intensifying. here you can see that circulation pretty clearly off the coast, right? so, at 1:30 giving you an idea that the storm is intensifying, it's coming down heavily. not just in the poconos, in

allentown, in philadelphia, but even down near the coastline as well. so, look for that to intensify this afternoon. by 4 o'clock, it's starting to ease up south and east before it pushes out of here at 6 o'clock. we're drying in philadelphia and moving off the coastline. so, we continue with these numbers where we expect one to 3 inches of snow in areas closer to the coastline in gray. through lakehurst, williamstown, salem county new jersey we're expecting three to 6 inches. the area of blue is basically i-95 stretching from trenton to the city to wilmington and that six to 10-inches of snow and that six to 10 is based on how much sleet will mix in with this storm system. but it's really the area in purple that we have been talking about. north and west of the city where you could see 10 to up to 16-inches of snow as it's coming down and this is a heavy wet snow that's going to be difficult to shovel, difficult to travel in. so, by 7:00 a.m., the impact is low to moderate. it's going to be slushy as you're traveling.

you really want to be careful. after 10 o'clock through about 4 o'clock this is the highest impact as you're traveling. you really want to avoid being on the roads during that time period and at 7 o'clock again tonight it's pulling out of here. things are improving so that's your impact scale. here's your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, today we have the heavy wet snow. really intensifying late morning into the afternoon hours. 35 degrees for your high. tomorrow it's blustery. the winds are still an issue. some sunshine returning and 40 degrees. maybe you get a quick little flurry still in the lehigh valley. other than that you're dry tomorrow. friday we could have a brief morning snow shower especially north and west or a couple of flurries. not a big deal. 43 degrees. saturday still chilly, lots of sunshine, though, 43. we set the clocks forward saturday night. on sunday it's partly sunny skies and 46. watching the coast once again for monday. mostly cloudy skies but we could potentially be talking about a bit of snow on monday as well as we're watching the storm develop. on tuesday windy and chilly

>> ♪ >> 4:16 now. it is wednesday morning, the day of our second nor'easter in the month of march. taking a look at sky6 there and you see that it is just raining at this location and maybe you're seeing some rain, too, but you will be seeing snow at some point later this morning. >> which means matt pelman will be seeing a lot of trouble on the roads as we go along. good morning. >> oh, yes, it's the day we've all been looking forward to, right? well, maybe some of us. maybe some of us but for us traffic folks, this is bound to be a challenging day although it is good news that a lot of people have off school and off work today. outside live in bucks county, this is route one, the not so super highway in morrisville at pennsylvania avenue. of course there are not a whole lot of people out and

about just yet but those are the southbound lanes headed down towards the pennsylvania turnpike. live look now in conshohocken at the blue route, 476, northbound lanes right here heading up toward the pennsylvania turnpike. ahead on the northbound northeast extension there was a crash overnight near lansdale but that's now gone. and this is a look at the turnpike itself over top route 100 here in uwchlan township. this is the turnpike right here and at this point all these highways are just wet. once you get to the shoulders definitely the grassy surfaces you are seeing some snow but the main lanes of the highway are just wet. same is true here in south philadelphia along i-95. you might recognize the big utz tow potato chip sign. the lanes of 95 are passable but just wet but you have to keep those speeds down and as the day progresses we expect those roads to become snow covered. right now that's not the case. problems continue in pennsauken. pretty big problems with downed wires blocking 73 southbound at 130 coming off the tacony-palmyra bridge northbound just one lane

barely squeezes by. in brooklawn you have more flooding this morning along 130 so just one lane getting by in each direction there by the brooklawn diner. kind of a mess in that area. franklinville glouceste:$&c @&c& crash along williamstown road at ashley drive and in middletown delaware, 301 is closed because ofñi an accident. stay over on highway one. no problems reported there. matt. >> thank you, matt. developing this morning, three men were shot inside a chinese takeout restaurant in west philadelphia. it happened on the 200 block of south 60th street at 1:00

brew. >> you know it well enough. >> there's also a wawa. >> that's a shock, that's a shock. let's head outside this morning. we're looking at rising water, yeah, just within the last 10 minutes the water started to really come up here along columbus boulevard delaware avenue. it looks like it's going to be a repeat of yesterday with those northbound lanes being blocked here near the ben franklin bridge. just stay over on 95 to get around that lake. now everything is a little bit funky today on mass transit. the regional rails are on a severe storm service plan. that's basically a saturday schedule. subways, though, they've been running all night, every 20 minutes. karen. >> temperatures are a little bit above freezing in the city. 1 degree. and it's going to stay about that way through the day today. and we're seeing a lot of melting on the roads but that's not going to be the case later on when the storm really intensifies and it's coming down heavily. one of the issues that we're really concerned about 'cause i know so many people lost power, some just got it back, we do have the concern for power outages today and that's with the winds. it seems most likely in the

northwest suburbs. snowfall rates of one to 2-inch an hour. we have the potential for thundersnow. when it's heavy and wet it tends to lay on the power lines. mainly snow north and west of the city. along i-95 we're going to see that mixing in and out through the day before the heavier snow takes over. mainly rain along the coastline, tam. >> okay, thank you, karen. going on to health check, for the first time people will be able to take a dna test at home that will check their risk for some sorts of breast cancer. the fda has given the company 23 and me the go ahead to sell a dna test for gene mutations linked to breast cancer. it will analyze for brca1 brca2 mutations. there are more than a thousand mutations. no doctor's prescription will be needed for the test but people are encouraged to talk to their doctors if they think they're going to choose to take this test. we'll be right back. >> ♪
