>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> now at 10 o'clock the year's first blast of winter weather blankets the region with snow. all across the area we're dusting off the snow shovels and clearing off sidewalks. not a lost accumulation but certainly from bucks county, all the way to broad street it was a snowy scene. tonight the flakes give way a frigid forecast as a bitter blast is settling in and it's going to hang around for awhile. most of the area saw 1 to 2 inches but certainly enough to remind that you say winter is here. good evening i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. we have team three coverage. diana rocco is tracking the can conditions on the roads and in homes but we'll begin with meteorologist kathy orr. kathy, just how cold will it get now? >> we're talking about the teens across the delaware valley tonight but it will get even colder over the next couple days. the cold is just part of it. the wind is the other part. combine the two and we're talking about dangerous conditions. take a look at storm scan3. we have a partly cloudy skies out there right now and we're seeing some lake effect snows actually through the great lakes and some of that cold and that moisture will be moving toward us so we could even see a few snow showers come tomorrow. right now in philadelphia the temperature 23, 17 allentown and tren tongs 11 degrees in the poconos. more cold to come. nine in chicago, cleveland at 13. so the coldest air isn't here yet. can come tomorrow morning and evening during the overnight we're talking about temperatures between 10 and 20 degrees, roads will

refreeze even the treated roads will freeze as temperatures will be brutal. slick spots and icy patches expected overnight and tomorrow morning. temperatures will stay well below freezing until friday. tomorrow this arctic front moves through, temperatures ranging 15 to 20 degrees below normal and that will stick for at least the next couple of days. then the wind kicks n take a look at what it will feel like tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. 15 in philadelphia, six in allentown, two below in the poconos. then by the evening it will feel like one in philadelphia, 22 below in the poconos. it is going to be a very cold day but not the coldest this week by far. coming up we'll talk about when it will get even colder, snow showers in the forecast and when wind chills will go below zero pretty much everywhere. more on that coming up later in the broadcast with that seven-day forecast. jess. for now we'll send it to you. >> we'll see you in a bit kathy. thank you. with that snow behind us we turn our after tension to the dangerous cold air. we're wondering what those cold temperatures will do the our roads. diana rocco is live in center city with more. >> reporter: jess today, remnants of the storm can still be found on cars, sidewalks and a lot of these roads tonight. but the big concern has now turned to ice. the snow may have stopped but what's left over has become the big concern. messy side streets and freezing temperatures creating a sheet of ice and making roads a very slippery surface. it started coming downlily tuesday making for slow travel and leaving commuters slipping and sliding. spinouts and accidents caused traffic backups throughout the

morning commute. in cherry hill, one person was killed in a five car accident before 10:00 a.m. on haddonfield-berlin road. on 24th and walnut icy conditions force add car into a store front in center city philadelphia. tow trucks were busy and so was aaa fielding a high number of calls when cars wouldn't start. >> what many motorists don't realize is that the extreme cold temperatures especially what we've seen today and what we'll experience the rest of the week are extremely harsh on a car battery. >> reporter: in this freezing cold aaa says keeping that emergency kit in your car could be life saving. home heating companies were also receiving a high volume of calls. >> one is to prepare knowing it was going to get cold and just wasn't kickism bill roth's heat was touch and go and with he his wife and three kids and he didn't want to spend the night in the coldly. >> didn't want them the to have to worry about anything especially with it this cold. >> reporter: heating technician doug says this is advertisement year is when heaters start breaking. he makes eight priority to get to calls quickly. >> the temperature only has to get to below 33 and the pipe can freeze and cause all kinds of problems. >> reporter: and as we head into the overnight hours and for tomorrow morning's commute the temperatures are so cold that black ice on the roadways has also become a big concern for authorities. in fact the state police have enlisted the help of several independent tow truck companies. they're worried about a lost disabled vehicles and some minor accidents on the roads tomorrow morning. we're live in center city tonight's i'm diana rocco for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly diana thank you.

the state of delaware. last year at this same time there were 100 cases. in pennsylvania, the department of health says there are nearly a thousand confirmed flu cases just in montgomery county. while abington hospital is reportedly in the middle of a hot zone. well, you can get all the information you need on the flu virus on our web site. we've got an overview for you a list of symptoms and risk factors and that tips on preventing the flu. you can find all that information on cbsphilly.com. click on health then flu. breaking news right now a gunman opened fire at a veterans affairs medical clinic on fort bliss in el paso texas and one person there is killed. officials also tell us tonight that the gunman is dead. it's unclear whether the gunman was shot by responding officers or if he took his own life. the fbi is involved in the investigation. right now what motivated that violence is not known. >> developing now philadelphia police are trying to find it person responsible for a violent home invasion in man that was what tonight. officers say a man walked into a home on the 3900 block of brown street pistol whipped a 39-year-old female inside and then took off. that victim was taken to the hospital with cuts and bruises. if you have any information call police. we're hearing tonight from one of the victims seriously injured during an attack in center city. samuel sierra is just out of the hospital. he spent a week there after a savage beating that nearly cost him his life at 12th and chestnut. surveillance video shows sierra walking from his job as a door plan at taboo bar on

december 27. a group approached the pair, words were exchanged. two men then suddenly broke away from the group and then started pummeling sierra causing bleeding from the brain. >> ears start to have a kind of ringing sensation and then my head again just has the physical pain. i hope they are captured certainly. at the end of the day i hope they would become better adults but it's still up to them to make those decisions for themselves. >> anyone with information about this attack is asked to call philadelphia police. a pair of suspects are facing charges tonight in the shooting of two new york city plainclothes police officers. police released surveillance video today showing one of the suspects firing on the officers. officials say the officers were responding to an armed robbery last night at a grocery store in the bronx when one of the suspects opened fire from inside a restaurant. both of those officers are expected to be okay. >> well, the new jersey legislative committee that investigated the george washington bridge scandal is now considering looking into governor christie's travels to dallas cowboys games. democratic assemblymen john wisniewski says and cochair loretta weinberg are discussing whether christie may have violated ethics rules by accepting travel and tickets by dallas cowboys owner jerry jones. christie says he's allowed to accept personal gifts from friends. the montgomery county d.a. is not running for reelection. risa vetri furman has served two terms. now instead of being seen behind the podium announcing arrests she's hoping to be on the bench as an elected county judge. today she told our walt hunter

that creating mission kids, mott montgomery county's first full service center for abused children is among her proudest accomplishments. >> moorestown new jersey swears in the youngest person ever to serve as a township's mayor. 26-year-old councilwoman victoria napolitano took the oath of office tonight. her husband held the bible during the okay. the township council is four to one republican and members of the majority rotate holding the mayor's z she's in her first term and says it is an honor to serve. >> very exciting for me. you know, to have more nim politics, especially young women is really important to me and something that i hope i can be -- i hope i can be a role model for other young women who are considering stepping into the political area thirteen. >> the mayor says her number one priority is passing a budget that does not increase taxes this year. >> tempers flare on the high school hardwood. punches fly during a game between two pennsylvania teams. yikes. kathy. >> in the wake of the snow we're talking about bitter cold. temperatures will bottom out this week, the coldest air we've seen since last year and wind chills will turn dangerous. we'll talk more about that and when we'll warm up around here. that's coming up in the seven day. >> and inside a box there were some items some founding fathers. they didn't have this technology. that's clearly not the right video. >> no. >> but it was a very neat time capsule from the 1700's that we will show you. >> there it is. it's from boston. we'll have that story coming up. plus everything from the consum ring ring!... progresso! it's ok that your soup tastes like my homemade.

(record scratch) you say stand n' stuff tortillas old el paso says... start somewhere fresh >> hard fought high school basketball game ends between two rivals ends in a brawl in harrisburg just as the buzzer sounded to end this game between york and harrisburg. a couple players exchange punches under the basket right there and that led to an all-out brawl. parents and police struggled to try and restore order on the court as these players wrestled and grabbed one another. one player was punched and collapsed to the floor. there's no word on if the players involved in that brawl will be suspended or otherwise face any kind of trouble. well, some of the hottest new gadget devices are on display in las vegas right now. i wish i was there. >> it's like looking into the future. >> i'm telling you, it's amazing. >> cbs news correspondent bigad shaban gives us a sneak peek inside the consumer electronics show. >> reporter: even video games get a high tech makeover at the annual consumer electronics show in las vegas. while virtual reality head sets might make you believe you're in the game colton says his new contraption actually puts your entire body into it all for about 500 bucks. >> basically you can think of it as a large joystick. when you're running it's the

same as pushing forward on a joystick controller. >> reporter: the newest products featured at ces offered consumers a chance to just lounge around and even enjoy the latest in tv's. 4k traffic light hd. prices are finally beginning to drop and more video providers like netflix are starting to offer content in 4k. >> basically what you're talking about is a picture that is four or more times as good as the pictures we get with high definition. >> reporter: inventors are even trying to rethink the way you take pictures. >> cheese. >> reporter: this mini remote lets you take a selfie up to 90 feet away from your phone but for more adventurous photographers how about a drone. >> the drone is the cool new idea. >> reporter: it's. >> it's a allowing your tripod to go 100 feet into the air. >> reporter: you might need one to get the full picture of this year's tech convention with an estimated 20,000 new gadgets taking up the span of 35 football fields. bigad shaban for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> a piece of history was unveiled in boston today. >> officials opened up a time capsule found at the capital. zoey inside it? >> old coins documents newspapers and a metal plate owned by paul revere. officials say it was placed in the cornerstone of the statehouse when construction began in 1795 then believe it was put there by sam adams and other revolutionary figures. the same council was accidentally -- capsule was discovered in eight seen teen 55 during renovations. it was moved into a copper box and put back in there until now. men and women with dreams

of hitting up the runway lined up for a chance of stardom. >> america's next top model held a casting call at drexel university's college of media arts and design. our friend tyra banks is looking for men and women between 18 and 27 years of age to compete to become america's next top model : good luck to everyone who waited out in the snow today. maybe we'll see them here on the cw philly. >> that snow has moved out. now it's time for the deep freeze. meteorologist kathy orr has been tracking some frigid weather and kathy you say it's going to be cold for awhile. >> it certainly s we're talking about days of cold and also we're talking about temperatures tonight that are getting down into the teens in some locations already. it's pretty amaze pentagon. our eyewitness weather watchers are saying cold and getting colder. take a look at some of these numbers. irwin is reporting in doylestown a temperature of 10 degrees. the winds is light. a one and a half inches of snow today. little bit on the milder side at 20 degrees. that's mild for tonight. michelle is saying in primrose pa20 degrees with a partly cloudy sky. a double blanket night. i couldn't agree more. let me show you one of our coldest temperatures on the board. 8 degrees right now being reported in perkasie. chuck is saying some tough road conditions as those areas that were treated earlier are freezing with these brutal temperatures. if you would like to be an eyewitness weather watch ever, you can be featured in one of our newscasts just sign up. go to cbsphilly.com/watchers. outside it is cold in philadelphia with the wind beginning to pick up out of the west at about 8 miles an hour. so feeling even colder with that that wind chill.

we talked about temperatures being below freezing. so, how long is it going to be? well, from this hour on we're talking about until friday afternoon. it will be 62 hours below freezing from 10:00 p.m. all the way through wednesday afternoon, thursday afternoon to friday afternoon so we will be freezing in philadelphia. right now the temperature 23, 17 in allentown 11 in the poconos. you go out west it's even worse. international falls 12 below. that's the temperature. minneapolis just two. but add the winds that are coming our way and it feels like it's 21 below in minneapolis. that's why you don't live there. 31 below in international falls. milwaukee seven below. minneapolis will have a day off from school tomorrow but not because of the snow, because of the wind chills that will go close to 50 below. for wednesday look for temperatures in the 20's and teens in philadelphia, winds gusting to 40, wind chills in the single numbers and in the teens. even colder thursday as wind chills go below zero pretty much everywhere. friday a little bit better by the afternoon. we get above freezing. future weather shows tomorrow with the clouds rolling back in and a few spotty snow showers. a reinforcing shot of cold air moves through and we'll be seeing some spotty snow showers with this weak disturbance, maybe a few snow squalls so please be aware of that mainly in the afternoon between 2 o'clock and 6 o'clock would be the best chance to see an isolated squall. wind chill advisory goes into effect for those brutally cold wind chills tomorrow afternoon through thursday morning and we're talking about wind chills thursday morning 15 to twenty below in the poconos, 10 to 15 below in the lehigh valley.

until tonight. simmonds sending the fans home happy. flyers win two to one. sixers back in action tomorrow when they host the bucs. last night sixers came from 17 points behind to beat cleveland. tony wrote ton gave them the lead for good. they beat a short handled cavaliers team 95-92 for their first home win of the season. >> we're not apologetic with this wip at all. i think it's unfair, you know, when you can start weighing out if we're about to compare resumes and years of experience, have a look at my group. young guys that don't know what they don't know that just came out and played. i'm proud of our team. >> to college hoops. eighth ranked villanova at saint johns looking for his 300th wip on the main line. dillon ennis with the steal. he would drive to the basket and gets the lop lay up but gets the rebounds and scores. right now wildcats trail at the half. the eagles have reportedly asked green bay for permission to interview elliott wolf for the vacant gm position. wolfe currently the packers director of player personnel. he has been with green bay since 2004 and is the son of long time packers executive ron wolf. ron helped rebuild the packers into super bowl champions in the 90's. the baseball hall of fame class for 2015 announced today. one time philly pedro martinez will be headed to cooperstown. he's a three time cy young award winner and led the majors in era five times in his 18 seasons in the bigs. randy johnson got 97.3 percent of the votes, that's the eighth highest in the history of the hall of fame voting. the had 4,071 strikeouts and won the cy young award five times.
