castle county right now. it's just a few spots for the philadelphia area. we saw a few rain drops in center city. now a more impressive shower, though very light, is moving through eastern berks county and just glancing by upper montgomery county. the temperatures, upper 50s for philadelphia. wilmington just bumped up a degree now to 58, while it's 52 in trenton, it's 52 degrees in pottstown and 50s across most of south jersey. so, a cloudy start and a mainly cloudy day today. cool with a chance of an isolated shower to start with. and that chance will stay with us as we go into the afternoon hours. we'll be up to 65 degrees and climbing, though, at lunchtime. and a big warm-up is on the way. we'll talk about what's coming when i come back neighborhood by neighborhood, but first, katy zachry has your traffic. good morning, katy. >> hi, bill. good morning. we like hearing about that warm-up. unfortunately, i don't have the best news to impart for new jersey drivers. there is an accident new jersey turnpike southbound right near route 322, which is exit 2.

it's an overturned truck that right now is blocking all lanes. they've been out there for the last hour trying to upright it and move it out, but an alternate around that is 295 southbound. for drivers in new jersey who are taking the 42 freeway north into philadelphia, you do have part of that long-term construction project in the left-hand lane, not affecting anything. fortunately, it's a holiday this morning, so we're really not seeing a lot of cars on the roadways. when you do get into philadelphia, a live look at the vine street expressway right near eighth street. you see a few headlights and taillights, but nothing really to write home about at this hour. and in bensalem, there is a fire in bucks county on street road right near knights road. an alternate is byberry. new from overnight, a woman is dead after crashing her car in northeast philadelphia after midnight on willits road near welsh. police say she lost control of her car, slammed into a parked car and overturned. the 29-year-old was thrown out of the driver's side window and died at the scene. new this morning, a cruel crime. a vietnam veteran who is a

fixture at eagles games. this man here had his prosthetic leg stolen during the game last night. nbc 10's matt delucia is live at the linc. matt, this crime has a lot of people scratching their heads. the man's leg was found overnight, right? >> reporter: that's right, chris. just a few hours ago. but what happened a little bit earlier in the night, this man was in this parking lot singing for eagles fans, doing nothing more than that. and then his prosthetic leg was snatched off his wheelchair. ♪ >> reporter: for sonny forriest, his ride is this wheelchair. it also doubles as his stage. ♪ hotown, motown, holiday inn ♪ the eagles gonna really dig it in ♪ >> reporter: but while he proudly does his rendition of "rapper's delight," police say a gang of three women stole his leg and his pride.

>> it made me feel real low. it made me feel real low. >> reporter: the vietnam vet tells us he was done for the night and trying to load up his van at the time. >> you know, when you're out there partying and enjoying yourself, and i looked around -- oh, this broad took my leg! >> reporter: an eagles fan through and through, sonny says this was his first chance to get to the linc this season, . as the birds were busy beating the giants, sonny was filing a police report. but just a couple hours after the win, investigators say a train operator on the broad street line found a prosthetic leg while doing a sweep at fern rock station about ten miles north of the stadium. and still in high spirits, sonny wrote a song for his thieves. ♪ it's a shame the way you mess around with old men ♪ ♪ it's a shaaaaame the way you hurt me ♪ >> reporter: definitely in high spirits.

february of 2015. well, you can bet bill campbell was smiling down on lincoln financial field last night. the dean of philadelphia sportscasters will be remembered at a funeral this morning. campbell died on monday at the age of 91. family and friends attended a viewing yesterday at blake doyle funeral home in collingswood. this morning's funeral will begin at 11:00 at christ the king church in haddonfield. campbell was behind the mike when wilt chamberlain scored 100 points in a game. he also broadcast the eagles' 1960 championship. the philadelphia archdiocese is considering a new list of churches to be studied for possible mergers or closure. st. genevieve catholic church in flowertown is 1 of 14 churches on that new list. all the churches will have to prove that they have the parishioners and the money to stay open. st. genevieve members say with more than 1,500 families, healthy donations and 250 students in their parish school, they hope they'll be okay. >> there must be a better way of doing it than frightening people, because that's what

happened. >> it's not going to be a matter of every man for himself and let's go in and, you know, kill the other guy. it's more going to be a matter i think of, let's in a calm way, in a reasonable way and in a collegial way, let's talk this through. >> the archdiocese says it expects to make decisions about the churches in the spring of next year. for the complete list of churches that the archdiocese could close, you can visit nbc10.com. 5:07 now. in central new jersey, the town of sayreville came together last night to show their support for the victims of an alleged hazing scandal. seven members of the sayreville war memorial high school football team in middlesex county are facing sex charges. prosecutors say they forced sex acts on freshmen players as part of a hazing routine. the board of education has already canceled the rest of the school's football season. community members at last night's vigil called for an end to the bullying. >> i want to praise the young men who did speak up. it takes a lot of guts and

courage. >> hopefully, time will heal all wounds, and we can move on and go back to being the sayreville that i always knew it was and still is. >> and there are reports this morning that the superintendent is actually considering canceling the next football season as well. the mayor of sayreville says that's something he will discuss with school officials as this investigation continues. eight minutes after 5:00 now. and the police manhunt for eric frein is entering its fifth week with officers hoping that the weather could help them out. frein has been on the run since september 12th when investigators say he shot and killed a state trooper outside a police barracks in pike county. hundreds of officers have been scouring the woods for frein ever since, focusing around his parents' home in monroe county. they're hoping that as the temperatures drop, which, as bill showed us, isn't going to happen this week, necessarily, and the leaves start to fall from the trees, that will give them an advantage over frein. just about 5:09. today marks the columbus day holiday, of course. >> yeah, a lot of people celebrating with a day off of work today. celebrations started yesterday in south philadelphia.

we've seen a few sprinkles already this morning. there's a chance of light showers during the day. a big warm-up, that comes tomorrow. wait until you see the temperatures. right now it's cool, 54 degrees in reading. we saw a few sprinkles in reading, now just cloudy skies. philadelphia 57 degrees and 61 right now in cape may. the showers are avoiding the shore. that's a live view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. but inland we're already seeing some spots on the radar screen, just isolated, very light showers in delaware, philadelphia saw a few sprinkles. it's dried out now. and there you can see the few rain drops. some of these are reaching the ground, not all of them. so, don't be surprised if you see a sprinkle this morning or this afternoon as the clouds will be with us for much of the day. very light shower moving now towards milford in bucks county. so, sunshine will break through at times, but mainly cloudy. 59 degrees in mt. pocono. into the 60s for allentown, quakertown and reading. and you'll see temperatures into the upper 60s for northeast philadelphia and trenton.

it is 5:15 now and now to decision 2014. one candidate in the race for governor in pennsylvania is getting support of the first lady. michelle obama will be in philadelphia this week to campaign for democratic candidate tom wolf. she appeared at an event at a rec center in west philadelphia. wolf is looking to unseat current pennsylvania governor tom corbett, and election day is just 22 days away. you can head to the polls november 4th to cast your vote for pennsylvania's next governor. also, vice president joe biden is traveling to philadelphia this week. while the exact details of his trip haven't been announced yet, we know his visit will highlight the importance of investing in the nation's infrastructure. his trip is scheduled for thursday. all right, we hate to even think about it, but it's a reality. who could forget last winter, we saw these vehicles all over the place, trying to combat all the snow that was falling. last year's demand for rock salt, in fact, is still driving up the price of that material all over the country.

and now there is real concern that some communities won't be able to afford as much as they need. of course, we saw that last winter. katy zachry is looking into those concerns this morning, katy telling us what penndot is doing to make sure there's enough rock salt to survive whatever this winter brings, right? >> yeah, and those images you just showed really evoke a visceral reaction from a lot of people, chris. we're all laughing in the studio. it was one of the busiest and brutal winters that penndot workers and drivers have faced in a whole long time. it's hard to forget scenes like this, when snow and ice made many roads difficult to navigate and drive on. a penndot spokesperson tells me they start preparing for the upcoming winter just as the previous winter comes to an end. so, by this time right now, they've stockpiled enough salt for a harsh winter. the difference is, penndot will be paying more for salt once their current contract expires halfway through this coming winter. >> we do not want to get low on salt. but i mean, we don't even want to get close to being low. so, as we use it, orders are put in to replenish the stockpile.

>> and penndot crews are tasked with so many repair projects because of that tough winter we had. not all of them pwill be complee in a few weeks. that means part of ridge avenue in philadelphia will not be complete until next year. all right, katy, so, we won't see it for at least a couple of weeks, if not longer, but in colorado, yeah, take a look at this. heavy snow is causing hazardous travel conditions. a cold front swept across the southern part of the state this weekend, producing a windchill as cold as 20 degrees. colorado also saw snow in september, 11 days before the official end of summer. that hurts. that was a record for the earliest snowfall there. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> a nice start this morning. temperatures are actually warmer than they were yesterday morning because there are some clouds overhead. that's a cloudy view from the comcast center. 57 degrees in philadelphia with

clouds, but temperatures won't come down a whole lot more. and rain hasn't been coming down at the shore, but we have been watching a few spotty showers in the area. most of the area is warmer because of the clouds. 58 degrees in wilmington. northeast philadelphia's 56 degrees, while audubon is 56. camden has dropped to 54. voorhees and cherry hill at 55 degrees, while glendora's down to 55 degrees and falling, but not much more, thanks to the cloud cover which will be around most of the day. we'll see some thinning of clouds, some breaks of sunshine, but also spotty showers. we've seen a little bit of activity. right now not much happening in philadelphia showerwise, but to the south in delaware and eastern maryland, these showers are moving to the east. so, expect to see a few rain drops this morning. they're certainly not going to last all day. a mostly cloudy day. occasional light, spotty showers with temperatures in the 60s this afternoon, but warmer weather's ahead. in fact, we won't have to wait long. look at this warm-up.
