nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 11:00, a firehouse scandal. why detectives say money from bingo nights and fund-raisers was instead spent of lavish vacations and events. it looks real until you touch it. the fake $20 bills passed around that has cops on alert. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> i'm tim rosenfield. new scrutiny now na the ebola patient in dallas has died. thomas duncan died today. once he started feeling sick in dallas he was delayed getting treatment in the hospital. he was sent home with antibiotics only to be

hospitalized two days later, given fluids and treated with an experimental drug. some have questioned whether that delay cost him his life. but today his girlfriend said, his suffering is over, my family is deep in sadness and grief, but we leave him in the hands of god. the sheriff's deputy in dallas county who went into duncan's apartment is hospitalized as well tonight. that deputy felt sick days after he had contact with duncan's family members and ordered them to be quarantined. he's being treated as a precaution. also tonight an nbc news freelance cameraman being treated for ebola received a transfusion from survivor kent brantly. it's believed antibodies might help in ashoka mukpo's recovery. starting saturday, five international airports in the u.s. will add an extra level of screening. newark, jfk, dulles, o'hare and

atlanta temperatures will have to have their temperature taken before they can leave those airports. the best and brightest who know everything you could ever want to know about ebola are right here in philadelphia. a convention on infectious diseases continues in the morning. tonight's topic, lessons learned on how to treat patients. denise nakano joins us live from city hall. you also spoke to local families with eyes to west africa. >> reporter: jacqueline and jim, for them there's an urgent need to address the ebola outbreak, from city hall to an infectious disease conference where the topic of ebola took center stage. >> very dire. >> reporter: driven by the need to contain the ebola outbreak where many west africans have friends and family, members of the mayor's commission on immigrant and african affairs had a roundtable discussion tonight at philadelphia's city hall. >> it's very quick to kill and the way and manner in which it is spreading is making people

second guess and what is happening. >> reporter: the first ebola death on u.s. soil, that of thomas duncan in dallas brings the disease that much closer to those monitoring it. >> in my heart that it happened in the united states and brings it even closer and increased the level of fear among people. >> reporter: from city hall to the pennsylvania convention center where some of the brightest minds in medicine are in town for a week-long conference on infectious diseases with ebola topping the list. >> to many americans it has been something that was remote. >> reporter: even president obama expressed the growing public health concern during a conference call with state and city leaders including mayor michael nutter. health officials and community advocates are working together to educate the public and provide help to west african countries in need. the ebola crisis prompted an educator and member of the ebola collaborative to take her mother out of sierra leone.

>> it's very alarming. so we brought my mom over, and she's not happy to be here because she wants to be home. >> reporter: there is a local effort to collect medical supplies for west africa, something as simple as gloves to help contain the outbreak there. the infectious disease conference starts again tomorrow morning with a briefing on the ebola outbreak. live in city hall, denise nakano, nbc 10 news. right now on nbc10.com we have an entire section devoted to the ebola crisis. >> happening right now, one person is accounted for and one person rushed to the hospital after this fire in delaware county skyforce 10 in media around 9:30 tonight. a facility for people with disabilities in media. people inside were evacuated. no word on how that fire started. >> a late night for a montgomery county jury deliberating the fate of a man accused of killing a baby and her grandmother, but no verdict tonight. the jury in the case worked

until 10:00 tonight. at one point everyone was called back into the courtroom, but just because a juror was feeling ill. the defendant is representing himself in the case. he spoke to jurors for nearly two hours earlier today during closing arguments. if convicted for the deaths of the 10-month-old baby and her grandmother, he could face the death penalty. living the high life on stolen donations. investigators arrested the longtime treasurer of a chester county volunteer firehouse  today. the district attorney says howard smith iii stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, spending it on personal purchases including fancy trips and phillies tickets. tonight, nbc 10's george spencer found that just about everyone in the valley township area has donated to the firehouse at one time or another. >> reporter: advertisements for the community bingo game still

flash on this screen. those prosecutor assist this was all about greed and they say a single purchase in hawaii blew his cover. westwood fire company is the type of chester county building you'd likely never notice if it weren't for this flashing sign out front. regularly enticing neighbors like george rodriguez to play bingo and support the volunteer fire company. this bingo attracted big crowds. >> oh, yeah, big crowds. >> all around the area. >> oh, yeah, definitely. >> reporter: but prosecutors say firehouse treasurer howard smith iii was stealing profits from those bingo games and other community donations to the tune of $300,000 between 2007 and 2012. >> greed was the motivating factor. >> reporter: mike noon tells us smith served the firehouse for four decades alongside his father, but once he became treasurer in 2007 prosecutors

say he began skimming funds for personal use. season tickets to phillies games, pool supplies and fancy meals and hotel rooms, even the extravagant hawaii vacation that finally blew his cover when the credit card company reported a suspicious charge. smith did not seem to be home tonight when we stopped by for comment. all told, noon says smith made 400 personal purchases with publicly donated cash. >> he betrayed the trust that the other men and women had put in him, and these are men and women who volunteered their time and risked their lives to protect their community. >> reporter: off camera tonight smith's mother called the charges against her son completely false. prosecutors hope this case will remind other organizations to put in place financial safeguards. reporting, george spencer, nbc 10 news. after a warm and sunny day

things have cooled down a bit. >> yeah, still a pleasant night out there outside philadelphia's city hall. let's get the latest on what you'll wake up to from first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. >> temperatures will be a little cooler as we go into tomorrow morning. cooler than what we had this morning across the area. 64 in philadelphia through parts of the lehigh valley mid-50s in south jersey and delaware. temperatures ranging from upper 50s in wilmington to lower 60s in millville. tomorrow you'll see plenty of sunshine again. a cooler start by 8:00 in the morning. areas north and west, you'll be in about the low 40s. by 10:00 in the morning, 62 and sunny, by noon we'll only be in the upper 60s. we'll be breezy, too. i'll show you more on how cool it will be in the morning and also our next chance of rain into the weekend. that's straight ahead. day 26 has come and gone in the hunt for fugitive eric frein in the poconos. police say they have their hands

on a treasure trove of evidence. investigators took a night vision scope, computers, hard drives and tablets from this house in east stroudsburg where frein stayed in the weeks before the shooting. they released an 11-page letter describing the ambush in detail found at a campsite. a new sketch of what he may look like a month after the attack that killed corporal dickson and wounded another. four sightings of frein in the past week alone. counterfeit cash. fake 20s dished out to buy gift cards in stores in delaware county. nefertiti jaquez joins us with surveillance video of the suspect using those bills. >> reporter: police are release this video because they want to catch this guy. tonight their fears that he may be a part of a larger ring. >> the guy's m.o. is that he goes into the store, he goes to the gift card rack, then pays

for the $200 gift card with counterfeit $20 bills. >> reporter: he's the man police say has been hitting up various businesses and using counterfeit money. >> we're getting calls from the bank because a lot of times the stores don't know that the bills are counterfeit. >> reporter: detectives first learned of the scam last friday. that's when he walked into this dollar store and used ten $20 bills to purchase a gift card. these are some of the phony bills. >> the print is a very good quality. the problem with it is the paper's not good. >> reporter: tonight we talked to shoppers, and they were surprised to hear about the man behind the scheme. >> he's like an average family man. i mean it's sad that things are that bad for someone that they're willing to risk everything with their freedom. >> reporter: then just a few hours ago investigators learned that the same man has also been targeting stores in upper chichester. just yesterday he used phony money at this walmart. when we asked if this was part of a bigger ring, police admitted it's something they're

looking into. >> we don't know how large it is or whether or not he's working alone. >> reporter: so the local police here tonight are now working with the feds because making or knowingly using counterfeit cash is a felony. police ask if you know anything to give them a call. we're live in ridley township tonight, nefertiti jaquez, nbc 10 news. to decision 2014. the candidates for pennsylvania governor facing off in their third and final debate. tom corbett and tom wolf took questions from a three-member panel and also tweets from viewers. among the issues, taxes, public pensions and education. >> we've laid off 27,000 educators over the last four years. we have -- class sizes have gone up, property taxes have gone through the roof. we're not spending what we did spend before on public education in the classroom and that can be seen by everybody. >> when he says 27,000 teachers were laid off, 14,000 of those

atlantic city police say they arrested 24 casino workers at this protest earlier tonight. all were charged and released. members of unite here local 54 clogged traffic. they are upset they have to give

up their pension so the taj mahal can stay open and running. >> no one will have pensions. everyone will be working low wage jobs. >> trump is threatening to close the taj mahal if the union doesn't meet its demands among other things. the taj would be the fifth casino to close in ac this year if it does shut its doors. police in montgomery county are looking for a man who wore a halloween mask to rob a bank. police sent us these surveillance photos. the man held up the td bank. police believe he's behind a robbery at the same bank back in july. in a camden county robbery this guy used a burqa as a disguise. the man handed the teller a note demanding the money at the beneficial bank. investigators believe the same man used the same disguise to rob two other banks last month then took off on a bike. a montgomery county mother

is accused of injecting her own 15-year-old daughter with heroin. police arrested patricia davenport and megan rudolph yesterday. they're charged with supplying drugs to minors. prosecutors say the two would take davenport's daughter and boyfriend into philadelphia to buy drugs. the women and teenagers would then allegedly use those drugs while driving home. tonight there's an arrest of the supermarket stabbing we told you about last night. today police arrested brian duffy. the homeless man is charged now with attempted murder. police say duffy stabbed a man inside a pathmart here after an argument. the victim's in critical condition tonight. tonight a school bus driver in delaware was given a ticket for following too closely and that led to a chain reaction crash. we brought you the crash as breaking news at 4:00. she couldn't stop the bus in time when a car in front of that

bus suddenly slowed down in greenville. the bus bumped the car and that started a four-vehicle crash. no one on the bus was hurt and the driver suffered minor injuries. allentown is offering thousands of new jobs to the downtown area. they rolled out a new way to find those jobs. the city says new construction will bring at least 4,000 jobs by next year, but the unemployment rate still hovers around 8%. so the mayor introduced a new online jobs portal called allentown tweet my jobs on its smartphone app you can browse listings near your gps location and see which local companies are hiring. it's free to the user but costs the city about $50,000 a year. tomorrow morning time warner cable shareholders vote on the proposed merger between time warner and comcast. today comcast shareholders voted and approved the deal. state and federal regulatory officials still expected to decide whether to approve the merger some time next year.

comcast is the parent company of nbc 10. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, we had a nice, mild day today. some areas saw temperatures in about the mid-70s. as we go through the overnight hours into tomorrow morning, it's going to be a chilly start to your day. temperatures will be cooler tomorrow morning than this morning. as we go through the afternoon, it will be cooler than today was. we'll be in the mid to upper 60s. then going into the weekend, the rain chances return back into the forecast. so we may be starting off with showers for the weekend. once again kind of like last weekend. right now we're already dropping into the mid-50s. in reading, 55, 56 allentown. 64 degrees philadelphia. 61 ben salem and trenton. upper 50s wilmington. and atlantic city right now temperature coming in at 60. we'll be cooler as we go into tomorrow morning. so for the bus stop forecast, we'll have clear conditions.

it will stay dry. areas north and west by bus stop time mid-40s. philadelphia low 50s and you'll be about the mid to upper 40s. here's what it will feel like when you wake up tomorrow morning around sunrise. these are the low temperatures. 42 for the low if allentown, 46 quakertown. around 50 in trenton and mt. holly, really 48 for doylestown and closer to the shore tomorrow morning 50 degrees, 48 vineland and around philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs morning lows should be to the low 50s. cooler for this morning and we'll be staying nice and dry. high pressure is pretty much keeping us dry as we go into thursday afternoon. we'll see nice conditions, but then as we go into friday notice more clouds start to move in. this is friday morning. most of your day friday should be dry but through the afternoon we can have a passing shower into friday night and this continues into the weekend, so starting off saturday morning some showers around, then we

today kids got a lesson in emergency prptdness. this is mrs. wagner's class in new castle. the kids participating in the pillow case project. it's a red cross program that teaches the kids how to plan and pack for emergencies like a fire or a major storm. >> smart and fun at the same time. those kids will probably have to have a jacket tomorrow morning. >> yes, probably a jacket, especially if you'll be out around 7:00, 7:30, even 8:00 in the morning. temperatures start off in the 40s. jim is shaking his head. he will not be up that early. i'll be sleeping hopefully. by afternoon, upper 60s.
