franklin bridge. we're starting to see that heavy westbound volume as drivers make their way into philadelphia. and a check of things on the 42 freeway. heading northbound as drivers make their way out to the bridge, as you can see, average speeds, especially near 295. still in the mid-50s, so, so far, so good on 42. rosemary is this. >> thank you, jillian. new from overnight, strong winds may have caused a fire at a garage in glenside, montgomery county. fire crews say the wind may have knocked down some power lines. no one was hurt and there was no damage to any of the storefronts in the neighborhood. the wet road may be to blame for a crash early this morning on i-95 north in yardley, bucks county. here's a look at the crash scene from one of our nbc 10 traffic cameras. the one-car crash sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries. happening today, ebola and enterovirus d-68 will be the focus of discussion at the pennsylvania convention center in philadelphia. that's because infectious disease experts from all over the country are gathering here for their annual conference starting today. the recent outbreaks have prompted organizers to add

several speakers and workshops centered on ebola and enterovirus d-68. this follows five more cases of that respiratory illness, enterovirus, in new jersey. one is in mercer county, one is in camden county, and three are in north jersey. that brings the total of sick children in that state to 14. and we have new information now, this just coming across, about the ebola outbreak. the first american patient to get ebola has donated blood to the nbc news photographer that is now battling the virus. dr. kent brantly, you remember his story, he was actually on a road trip a couple of days ago when he learned that his blood type was a match for the nbc news freelancer who has ebola, so he actually pulled off of the highway and donated his blood immediately. the "today" show will have much more on that in an exclusive interview. in dallas, health workers are monitoring ten people who definitely had contact with thomas duncan and more than 30 people who may have had contact with him to see if they have symptoms of ebola. duncan was the first person to be diagnosed with that virus in

the u.s. he remains in critical condition. yesterday reference jesse jackson led a prayer vigil at the dallas hospital where duncan is in isolation. today in montgomery county, the jury could begin deliberations in the trial of a man accused of murdering a baby and her grandmother. nbc 10's monique braxton is live outside of the county courthouse in norristown. monique? >> reporter: rosemary, this case has been full of surprises over the past couple of days. always the case when a defendant is representing themselves. from what we're told, raghunandan yandamuri spent several hours, often rambling, on the witness stand over two days, trying to convince the jury he is not a killer. looking at the video now, this is the defendant. he told jurors his dna was on the grandmother's body because he was attempting to help the real killers remove gold jewelry. now, during rambling testimony, yandamuri told police he was forced to confess to killing a 61-year-old king of prussia

grandmother and her 10-month-old granddaughter. prosecutors say, though, the 28-year-old had planned to kidnap the baby, hold her for ransom to pay off several thousand dollars in a gambling debt. well, later this morning here inside this courthouse, you're going to hear closing arguments. of course, yandamuri is representing himself, so he will participate in those closing arguments. then the judge will give instructions to the jurors. then they could begin deliberations. we'll be here and have it for you. in our next report, we're going to tell you what you can expect later this morning. live for now in norristown, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. 6:04 now. later today, we're expecting an update from police on the manhunt for eric frein, now in its 26th day. he's wanted for the murder, of course, of that pennsylvania state trooper. earlier this week, police searched an abandoned resort in stroud township and they found a cabin that had been recently lived in. its rooms had plastic covering the windows. the ceilings were covered with air fresheners and the walls were plastered with newspaper

articles. now, police are not saying what those articles were about. searchers also found a letter written by frein, they believe. it details the shooting of two state troopers on september 12th and his escape. today a preliminary hearing is scheduled for a man charged with butchering a prostitute after he learned the prostitute was a man. charles sargent is accused in the stabbing death of mark williams. authorities say that sargent dismembered the body. the killing happened at this home on north 32nd street in july of last year. according to police, the victim's body parts were found in a vacant lot on sedgley street. authorities say sargent committed the murder after discovering that williams was a cross-dressing prostitute. lawyers in the murder of philadelphia teacher beau zabel will hold a pretrial conference today. zabel's accused killer, marcellus jones, is already serving a life sentence for murdering his alleged accomplice. in 2008, zabel was shot to death in south philadelphia by robbers who wanted his ipod. zabel had just moved here from

minnesota to teach math at public schools. a widener university student is charged this morning with posting ail columbine-style shooting threat online against people who bullied him. police say that 20-year-old luis vela of lodi, bergen county, posted this on the website yik yak. students saw it yesterday and quickly alerted school officials, who then sent out an alert. the campus was not put on lockdown, though, because it was not an active shooter situation. six minutes after 6:00 now. this morning police in delaware county want to find a man who they call a serial burglar. police in upper darby tell us there have been five burglaries in the overnight hours since september 20th, the most recent happening yesterday morning on clover lane. a woman fought off that burglar inside her bedroom in front of her 9-year-old daughter. it was absolutely terrifying, she says. she spoke to us on the condition that we don't show her face because she is still terrified. >> i am not safe. my kids are not safe. this man literally walked up in my house. he violated me and my family.

>> now, police say that the burglar is entering homes through first-floor windows and stealing handbags, wallets and electronics. meantime, several neighborhoods in bucks county are also dealing with concerns over a possible serial burglar. police are investigating to see if five break-ins in plumstead township in buckingham are connected to a rash of attempted burglaries in hatfield township. they say similar techniques have been used, including cutting through screen doors or windows to get in. the most recent burglary happened on sunday. pennsylvania and new jersey are now joining other northeastern states in fighting the heroin trade. law enforcement authorities will share information and resources that could lead to more arrests. those authorities say that 98% of heroin cases involve people who outmaneuver police by crossing state lines. now to "decision 2014." with just 27 days left to go until election day, the candidates for governor will square off in their final debate tonight. republican governor tom corbett will face off against democratic

challenger tom wolf at 7:00 this evening in wilkinsburg. that's just outside of pittsburgh. meanwhile, a new poll out from quinnipiac university shows that corbett is narrowing the gap on his democratic challenger, but wolf still leads by double digits, 55%-38%. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> storms overnight moved out just in time for us to get a nice view of the lunar eclipse that is under way. still a few clouds around, but they won't last. we'll see sunshine and a gusty wind, which has already started. we've already seen wind gusts of more than 20 miles an hour this morning, up near 30 miles an hour this afternoon. then with less wind, clear skies and dry air, it will be a chilly night tonight. right now 59 degrees and falling under clear skies in allentown. still some clouds keeping the temperatures a bit warmer for northeast philadelphia, but look at that. about 80% of the moon is covered now with the earth's shadow.

today, a man is scheduled to be formally arraigned for the murder of an art school graduate in philadelphia. police say jeremiah jakson strangled the woman and stuffed her body in a duffel bag. laura araujo was 23 years old. her body was found outside an abandoned house in kensington back in july. police say jakson killed araujo after forcing her to give up the p.i.n. number to her bank card. we have new information on a bear that killed a hiker. state wildlife officials say the black bear did not have rabies. police shot and killed that bear after a rutgers university student was mauled in a nature preserve last month. officials say it's the first time a bear has killed a person in new jersey. 6:14. a man is facing charges this morning after a bloody stabbing inside a busy grocery store in northeast philadelphia. it happened last night at the

pathmark on cottman avenue. police say two men got into an argument in the dairy aisle. one pulled out a kitchen knife and stabbed the other in the neck and face, right in front of other shoppers. police arrested the suspect near the store, which had to close for the night so workers could clean up all of the blood. police say they were really surprised, because shoppers in the midst of all of this blood were still going about their normal business and were actually pushing their carts through the blood and they were having to clear off the scene so that they could preserve evidence. the last time we checked, the victim was in critical condition. again, the suspect was arrested near the store. a grand jury is expected to investigate two new york city police officers for allegedly punching and hitting a 16-year-old in the face with a gun. investigators say the august incident was caught on video. you can see it here. police say it shows the officers chasing the teen, and after he stops, one officer punches him. then the other officer hits him with the gun. the officers have not been charged and their names have not

been released, but one has been suspended and the other is on modified duty. 6:15 now, and happening later today, minnesota vikings running back adrian peterson will be in court for his hearing on child abuse charges. he's expected to plead not guilty. the nfl star was charged last month with using a small tree branch or a switch to discipline his 4-year-old son. peterson is on paid leave until his legal problems are resolved. and that means if his trial doesn't start soon, he may not play this season. los angeles police say actor steven collins is safe and well this morning. a neighbor reported hearing a gunshot come from his home last night. police investigated and said it was just a popping sound and collins wasn't even home at the time. collins is under investigation for allegedly molesting teenage girls 40 years ago. tmz reports that it has a tape in which collins confesses to his estranged wife to being a child predator. collins starred on the tv show "7th heaven." at 6:16 this morning, already some problems out on the road, including a new accident.

too. just a couple puddles left this morning. 63 degrees in philadelphia. the wind is steady at 15 miles an hour, but it's pushing the clouds out of here and giving us a great view of the lunar eclipse. about 90% covered right now. we are less than eight minutes away from totality this morning. at 6:25 it will be a total lunar eclipse in the western sky. in fact, the moon is setting, so you won't have a lot of time to catch this act, but it will be dramatic to begin with, especially before the sun comes up at 7:05, and then the moon sets at 7:09. so, a nice view of that as the clouds move out and the temperatures cool down. nice and cool north and west. that's with clearing skies. it's 59 degrees at lafayetteville right now, 61 in upper gwinnett and skippack is 58 degrees. farther north and west it's in the upper 50s for gilbertsville and pottstown at the airport is 59 degrees this morning. clouds, they're out of here. we've got some breaks in the clouds and those will be

increasing. so, lots of sunshine, but a gusty wind with winds gusting to 30 miles an hour this afternoon. cooler day tomorrow, less wind, clear skies overnight, 49 to start with, 67 in the afternoon. clouds are back on friday, increasing with a chance of some late-day showers, especially in delaware and south jersey. then a rainy saturday to start with and a few showers in the afternoon. and rain returns on sunday into monday. it's called spice or k-2, but most people know it as synthetic marijuana. police in berks county say it may be the reason why dozens of people, mostly teens, have ended up in the hospital. plus, water woes. we'll tell you what's been found in the water in one montgomery county community that has residents on high alert.

we had clouds earlier. those have moved out of the way. and now we're just ready for some sunshine today and some pretty strong winds, gusts up to 25 miles an hour, according to meteorologist bill henley. in just a minute, we're going to give you a live update on the lunar eclipse that's taking place right now. it goes by the names k-2 and spice, but police say synthetic marijuana may be what's responsible for sending 50 people to the hospital in berks county. doctors call this a serious situation with patients exhibiting psychotic behavior. so far, they say it's mostly teenagers who have been rushed to the emergency room at reading hospital, but the oldest patient was in his 50s. authorities believe the synthetic marijuana may have been sprayed with other chemicals or laced with heroin. >> it's not worth trying. it's dangerous. people have almost lost heir lives because of it. >> now, the berks county district attorney says his office is looking for the source of the k-2, perhaps a common dealer who sold to all of the patients. homeowners near the former willow grove naval air station

in montgomery county are concerned about harmful chemicals in their drinking water, and they have some reason to be. members of the navy and the environmental protection agency met with horsham residents last night and addressed concerns about high levels of pfc, chemicals commonly found in firefighting foam. the navy tested 18 out of 200 wells so far. two have to be shut down. testing will take two more months to complete. happening right now, there's something coming between the earth and the sun -- or the moon and the sun, and that is the earth, causing the blood moon. there you see it. you can see the reddish hue there the moon is taking on, and this is as a total lunar eclipse takes place. and you can see now that the -- and we have some aircraft flying past the moon as well. you can see now the lunar eclipse about three-quarters of the way through. we expect this blood moon, as they call it, to last until shortly after 7:00, around 7:10 this morning. and you can see from this live

picture as well why it's called a blood moon. it takes on that rusty red hue. we had an earlier one in april. again, this is lasting until about ten minutes after 7:00. >> pretty cool looking stuff there. let's take you to a live look outside right now at the vine street expressway. still have this accident on the westbound side on the shoulder, as drivers approach 76. but as you can see, it is really slowing down traffic out there. this is a live look at the vine at eighth street as drivers head out to 76. and you can see it's starting to back things up past broad street now on the westbound side of the vine. so, we're seeing a lot of congestion there. we're seeing heavy volume on 95. and we still have a problem on the pennsylvania turnpike. i'll get you updated on that coming up in just a few minutes. let's head down the shore to a live look outside in cape may, where the skies are looking pretty clear. still see a few clouds out in the distance, bill. >> yeah, just a few clouds in the distance right now. those clouds will be clearing out, but they've moved out just in time to see the total lunar eclipse, which has just begun. the eclipse started at 5:15, but

shoulder of the vine street expressway westbound as drivers head out to 76. and this is helping to cause heavier than normal volume than we're used to seeing this hour on the vine westbound, so keep that in mind. pennsylvania turnpike approaching reading, one lane is blocked in that area because of an accident. and this is a new accident into the system in collegeville. valley forge road between stump hall road and skippack pike. watch for lane restrictions there as well. >> thank you. new overnight, two police officers from new york are reportedly expected to be arraigned today on sexual assault charges of a woman at an atlantic city casino. the precedent atlantic city reports that it happened last april at the trump taj mahal. one of the accused, a new york state trooper, was arrested last night. the other, a new york city police officer, turned himself in. nbc 10 checked with prison logs and confirmed that the two are in custody. also new from overnight, two drivers sent to the hospital after a car crash are expected to be okay. nbc 10 was on the scene along north 1nd street in the juniata

6:42. a live look at cape may. you can see we're just a few minutes before sunrise there. the streets were wet earlier this morning after rain moved through. everything is clear now, though. we're expecting sunshine, temperatures around 70 today and a lot of wind. so, get ready before you head out the door. on now to the effort to stop isis. president obama will hold meetings at the pentagon today to discuss the threat from that terrorist group. he'll be meeting with senior military leaders and members of his national security council. the president will get an update on air strikes aimed at isis targets. and canada is joining the coalition of nations combating isis. canadian lawmakers voted last

night to send fighter jets to iraq to take part in those air strikes. now, that came after a request by president obama for canada to join the international effort. >> the war is only beginning to intensif intensify. the fighting has just begun. >> the fbi wants to identify the man in this new isis propaganda video. authorities say from the sound of his voice, he could be an american or a canadian. he says the men behind him are syrian soldiers digging their own graves. they were later executed, according to the man in the video. there's a court date today for the man suspected of providing the gun used by the boston marathon bombing suspects to kill a police officer. m.i.t. officer shawn collier was shot five times while in his police cruiser in cambridge just three days after the marathon bombings. police arrested steven silva in july on weapons charges. they say they recovered a gun he owned following a shoot-out in which tamerlan tsarnaev was

killed. his brother, dzhokhar tsarnaev, is awaiting trial on federal charges and could face the death penalty if convicted. three people died and more than 250 were injured in the boston marathon bombing attack in april of last year. let's head now to california, where a pilot is dead after his air tanker crashed while fighting a wildfire on the edge of yosemite national park. the plane smashed into a steep canyon wall yesterday and pieces of the aircraft landed on the highway close to firefighting crews. no one on the ground was hurt. the fire, by the way, started yesterday and has burned more than 130 acres so far. back in our area, police say they expect to charge a mother and her two daughters for attacking a 14-year-old girl inside of a philadelphia high school. according to police, the victim was punched, kicked and had her hair pulled at edison high school in hunting park. she had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out. police say the woman accused in the attack is 32 years old. her daughters are 15 and 17.

it's unclear exactly what sparked this incident. it is game over for one new jersey high school football team. school officials have canceled the rest of the season for sayreville high school after allegations of hazing, harassment and bulling of the players. the superintendent says the inappropriate behavior may have happened before the season and it's being investigated. the county prosecutor is also investigating. this morning in philadelphia, comcast shareholders will vote on the proposal to merge that company with time warner cable. the vote is set to start at 9:30 at the kimmel center. time warner shareholders will vote tomorrow in new york on the $45 billion proposal. state and federal regulatory officials are expected to decide whether to approve the deal some time next year. comcast is the parent company of nbc 10. pass or don't graduate. that's just how important a new standardized test is at high schools in pennsylvania. parents in delaware county packed the radnor township municipal building last night for a forum on the keystone exams.

those tests will evaluate proficiency in algebra, literature and biology. the exam will be given three times a year to juniors and seniors, beginning with the class of 2017. students have to pass all three subjects to graduate. governor jack markell will be principal for a day at the booker t. washington elementary school in dover, part of an initiative by the chamber of commerce to help schools and local businesses create partnerships. this is a good one. one local man is on a mission to make it from coast to coast on foot and he's almost there. norman horn of phoenixville is walking across the country to raise money to fight childhood cancer, and he's less than 75 miles from the finish line. the 30-year-old says it's always been a dream of his, so he quit his job as a personal trainer, moved to california and started walking in april. >> ultimately, i have a little bit of a restored faith in humanity, and it's been a really -- it's been a blessing with the way people have treated

lovett town and langhorne. doylestown has dropped into the 50s this morning. that's 57 degrees and falling in perkasie and quakertown. still could go lower. the coldest part of the day is just after sunrise. the driest time of the day for us is, well, right now, actually, because those storms from last night have moved out. big storms in new england. but we will stay dry for the rest of the day with lots of sunshine. the temperatures will climb into the 70s this afternoon. but there is some cooler weather ahead, and you'll start to feel it tonight. so, enjoy the 70s while they're here. plenty of sunshine this afternoon, gusty winds will be out of the west gusting to 30 miles an hour later today. tomorrow, a cooler start, 40s in the morning, 67 in the afternoon. but bright, sunny skies for thursday. should start with some sunshine on friday, but clouds will be building. there's a chance of some showers friday, late friday, especially in delaware and south jersey. and then some steadier rainfall to start with on saturday. it might taper off later on

saturday and then return on sunday with a high of 63, and still a chance of a shower to start monday off. but look at the warm-up ahead for tuesday, 78 degrees with sunny skies. the rain not a problem for drivers anymore at this hour, but there are some accidents out there already. >> nbc 10's jillian mele has had her work cut out for her this morning. jillian, what's going on? >> we're following an accident out of the north wales area this morning. for drivers in montgomery county, dekalb pike, 202 blocked off on the southbound side. this traffic getting by is northbound. all southbound lanes are blocked as a result of that mult vehicle accident. so, go ahead and take 309 or swedesburg road, depending where you need to go. either one will be just fine. this accident cleared off the vine street expressway, westbound approaching 76. initially it was blocking the left lane and then was moved over to the shoulder and really caused a backup in the area, but that has also started to quiet down a little bit. willow grove, york road at tur wood road, an accident. mass transit is on or close to

over philadelphia. here is a live look at the moon. you can see why they call it a blood moon. this happens right when the moon is closest in its orbit to the earth, so that's why it looks so huge. it's actually practically the size of the supermoon. the last time we saw a blood moon from a full lunar eclipse is back in april, and i did some checking. this is the second blood moon in a series of four. they happen about every six months, so we'll see the next one next year in april. we do expect this blood moon to last until shortly after 7:00 this morning, so you still have a few minutes to check it out. five minutes until 7:00. later today we expect an update from police on the manhunt for eric frein, now in its 26th day. he's the man wanted for the murder of a pennsylvania state troop trooper. earlier this week, police searched and abandon resort in stroud township and found a cabin recently lived in. its rooms had plastic covering the windows, ceilings with covered with air fresheners and the walls were plastered with newspaper articles. no word on what those articles were about. searchers also found a letter written by frein detailing the shooting of two state troopers

on september 12th in pike county and his escape. happening today, philadelphia is ground zero today for discussions on ebola and enterovirus d-68. nbc 10's jesse gary is live in center city, where there was a last-minute change of plans for this annual conference on infectious diseases. >> reporter: chris, they've added discussions about the ebola outbreak and the enterovirus d-68. i've made arrangements to talk to one of the attendees. he hasn't made it here yet, but i have been on the phone. he is a specialist from the university of pittsburgh who consults with the white house. he's on his way over to us and we'll bring you his comments during the cut-ins in the "today" show. but the first session starts in just a couple of minutes, and this conference wraps up on sunday. and of course, the big news, the five new cases the state of new jersey's reporting with evd-68, five cases, one in camden, new jersey. live in center city, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. today in montgomery county, jury deliberations could begin in the trial of the man accused

of murdering a 10-month-old baby and her grandmother. nbc 10's monique braxton is live outside of the county courthouse in norristown. monique? >> reporter: rosemary, raghunandan yandamuri is representing himself, but he does have an adviser. in about two hours here at this courthouse, he's going to try to convince jurors that he's not a desperate killer with a gambling debt. take a look at the man who's been behind several surprises over the last couple days. taking the stand in his own defense, yandamuri told jurors police forced him to confess to fatally stabbing a 61-year-old king of prussia grandmother and suffocating her 10-month-old granddaughter. an a five-day search in which he assisted, the baby was found dead in the apartment building. prosecutors say the 28-year-old had planned to kidnap the baby and hold her for ransom to pay off several thousand dollars in a gambling debt, but yandamuri says two men who robbed him are the real killers. now, this morning, jurors will hear closing arguments. it is expected yandamuri will say the real killers forced him

to type those ransom notes, demanding cash for the baby's return. now, we're going to be here when the proceedings begin and we'll also have the outcome of the jury's verdict. live in norristown, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. two minutes before 7:00 and we still have this accident in the north wales area on decekal pike. traffic blocked off right now at swedesburg road. this is the southbound side right here, and no traffic can access southbound. some of that northbound traffic is able to get by intermittently, but we still have a delay in both directions as you approach the stopped traffic and then, of course, the closure point. and it looks like some traffic is being diverted around that scene right now, so you can take route 309 to get around it. that will be just fine. the ben franklin bridge is stacking up. heavy volume on the westbound side as drivers make their way into philadelphia. it's completely at a crawl right now from camden into philadelphia. the rest of the bridges looking pretty good. we do have some normal volume, though. 76 at south street, slow moving
