like that happening to a daughter of mine. and to have to go through that, yeah, like that's very painful. it's painful to hear, painful to watch. i mean, it's just horrible. and to think that my daughter is being accused of it, yes, it's even more so. >> i was also able to ask her sister a few questions. i'm working on that part of the story coming up on nbc 10 news at 5:00. back to you. >> let's go back to what happened in the courtroom today. >> what happened on the witness stand? >> reporter: well, today the prosecution called a special victims unit detective who investigated this case. and he testified on the witness stand he was searching for the victim's dna evidence inside raguster's home. he said they were not able to find that evidence, but he did believe that christina raguster's had a floor rug that may have had evidence on it but the raguster'ses may have then that away before police investigated and searched that home. reporting live at the criminal

justice center, christine maddela, nbc 10 news. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues now with this. the woman punched in this video at an atlantic city casino is sharing her side of the story now. ray rice's wife says no one knows the pain the newly released video is causing her and her family. >> and janae rice says she still loves her husband who was fired from the ravens yesterday after the video from the revel casino went public. nbc 10 south jersey reporter cydney long is live in mays landing. >> sydney, i know you've been trying to get answers from the prosecutor and judge in atlantic county about how this case was handled especially in light of the new video that came out yesterday. >> reporter: that is correct. it has now been 33 hours since the elevator assault of janae palmer surfaced yesterday. her being punched by her then fiance ray rice. we have not given up since trying to find out how he qualified for the lenient program known as pretrial intervention. today we went knocking on two

doors right here next door the prosecutor's office as well as the atlantic county courthouse and that office that oversees the lenient program. whether or not politic county prosecutor jim mclean actually laid eyes on the telling surveillance footage of janae palmer being knocked to the elevator floor is what we've been asking his office for two days straight. today being told the prosecutor and his public information officer were not in the building. >> he e-mailed me about 20 minutes ago. >> he's not in can you please stop recording? >> reporter: what we learned from the criminal division manager who oversees pretrial intervention is that ultimately three parties, the prosecutor, the pti coordinator and the judge in this case all weigh in on granting the program an alternative to jail time to any defendant, rice included. and that victims like janae palmed in this case are consulted. a pti coordinator would only confirm her office did not view

either video, and that rice has to undergo anger management, report to a probation officer, and must stay gainfully employed to complete the program. >> the reality is it happens every day in new jersey and throughout this country. >> reporter: assemblyman joe cryan told us by phone he's been working on legislation long before the video surfaced to stiffen the guidelines for pt irk and says the initial aggravated assault charge by a grand jury would have eliminated rice if it were already law. >> i don't want to rush to judgment because this is a societal issue more far-reaching than ray rice. to me it's about the focus of the victim. >> reporter: the criminal complex here has been crawling with both local and national media today, but still no sign of the prosecutor jim mclean. also last night assemblywoman mascara, who represents both camden and gloucester counties, is also calling for changes to that pti program. but governor christie says right now is not the time to change

>> yeah. second day in a row now. looks like rain just about at any time. we've got clouds in philadelphia, clouds at the shore, clouds in the mountains. and hardly any rain anywhere. most of it is way offshore as you can see. there's a little bit that's moving in from the ocean. a couple of showers down toward cape may. a little bit more at the delaware beaches. but practically nothing farther inland. now, one or two showers could make it at least into other portions south and east of the i-95 corridor as we go through the night tonight and first thing in the morning. but the general trend is going to be continuation of that easterly flow keeps the temperatures down. we're in the mid 70s across just about the entire area. 78 degrees in dover. so we'll stay cloudy throughout the night. a couple of showers, mainly toward the south and east. we've got thunderstorms to deal with on much warmer weather. the timing on that with the seven-day in a few minutes.

20 minutes of nonstop news continues now with another casino closing in atlantic city. >> today the news comes from trump entertainment resorts. the company which operates the trump plaza and trump taj mahal filed for bankruptcy today. now casino expects to close in november. it would be the fifth casino in the resort town to shut down this year. >> nbc 10's jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg live this afternoon in atlantic city. >> ted, you've been getting reaction to the latest round of difficult news. >> reporter: denise and jim, the trump taj mahal has more than 2800 employees. and those we've spoken with are obviously very concerned. but casino union leaders are convinced that this bankruptcy filing today does not mean the casino will close. >> terrible. i'm devastated. devastated. >> reporter: word of the taj mahal's possible shutdown quickly spread among its loyal customers. >> we love it here. we've been coming here for about

20 years. it's a shame. a real shame. >> reporter: nbc 10 obtained this internal memo which went out this morning to taj mahal employees, warning them that without significant expense reductions the casino is expected to close on or shortly after november 13. taushi and his wife both work at the taj. the threatened shutdown came the same day that trump entertainment resorts filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. the taj mahal's sister casino, trump plaza, is set to close one week from today. in its filing, the company indicated a taj closure was likely if it doesn't receive cost-cutting concessions from union workers. >> i don't think the casino's going to close. i believe that the trump organization is trying to capitalize on the fear of workers in atlantic city to get concessions that no other casino in the city has even considered. >> reporter: faced with nearly $300 million in debt and an inability to pay its loans,

union leaders believe the company will soon be taken over by its lenders. >> no one is willing to give up their health care and their retirement so people who have mismanaged the property into the ground get a few more months of salary. >> reporter: so far no response on those comments from trump entertainment resorts. the union says even if employees here were to work for minimum wage with no benefits, it still wouldn't be enough to keep the property in the hands of its current owners. live in atlantic city, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. so here's a timeline of the casino closures by the numbers. atlantic club closed in january. showboat shut its doors late last month followed by revel last week. trump plaza closes one week from today. as you've just heard, the taj mahal could close in november. the fifth casino to close in 2014. if the taj does close, that will leave atlantic city with only seven casinos down from 12 at the start of the year.

left bally's, bergata,caesar's and others. go to nbc10.com to read more about it. a monmouth race track in ocean port says even if the track isn't ready to accept bets that soon it intends to start within the next 30 days. the track already also has a room for its sports book. governor chris christie announced monday sports betting would be legal at state casinos and horse tracks. now to concerns spreading just as rare chaldhood illness sweeps across the u.s. sending hundreds of youngsters to the hospital. >> it could be only a matter of time before it spreads to children here in our area. nbc 10's deanna durant is live with more on what parents should do. >> deanna, what did a local pediatrician tell you? >> reporter: the centers for disease control has been saying

parents should be watching out for flu-like symptoms. and doctors in our area say some of the most severe cases show that kids have difficulty breathing, could have mouth sores and even rashes. >> many of the children who required hospitalization in missouri and illinois had underlying asthma. but not all. some of the children had no prior history of a medical condition. >> reporter: dr. julia salmons is an infectious disease specialist. here says threi the retrovirus rare virus not seen for 40 years. kids from babies to teens are at the most risk because their bodies don't have anti-bodies to ward it off. >> even infection with this virus can be completely mild. it may just be a common cold and lead to nothing else. but if parents are seeing their children have difficulty breathing, have rapid breathing, those would be reasons to contact your doctor or be seen right away. >> smaller children, babies who

can't tell you that they don't feel well, salmon says you need to pay close attention to their behavior. >> looking closely at how they're feeding if they're staying hydrated, the number of wet diapers they're producing. certainly any concerns about the way a child is breathing, the way a child is looking. >> reporter: in some of the hardest-hit states hundreds of children have been hospitalized from e.r. visits to intensive care. making matters worse, there's no vaccine for the virus. one doctors say hasn't hit our area. but with a strong presence in at least 12 states, doctors expect the virus to hit the delaware valley soon. complicating matters, kids are back in schools. they're in daycares. they are spreading germs. doctors say the best way to ward off the virus, prevent yourself from getting it, good hand washing, clean surfaces including toys and door knobs and any place germs may be present. the cdc is saying the hardest-hit states include colorado, illinois and missouri. deanna durante, nbc 10 news.

we have new information in a child abuse case involving a south jersey army major and his wife. jury selection began today in federal court in the case against john and carolyn jackson of mount holly. the couple accused of abusing and neglecting their adopted children. prosecutors say the assaults were so violent they caused broken bones on the children. both have pleaded not guilty to the charges. a special education teacher accused of having sex with one of her students was back in a philadelphia court today for a pretrial conference. stephanie amato faces charges including sexual assault and child endangerment. authorities say a 14-year-old student said he had sex with the 30-year-old teacher on several occasions. amato was removed from ethan allen school in mayfair following the allegations. now the decision 2014. three races are on the ballot in today's primary election in delaware. republicans ken simpler and ken

valenzuela are running for state treasurer. there's also a republican contest for the right to take on incumbent democratic senator chris kuntz. we're told turnout has been light. polls are open until 8:00 tonight. quite a surprise for this teacher in camden as new jersey's governor there, chris christie, headed back to school tauchltd he popped in on a first glade class at the octavius b. cato community family this afternoon. he was joined by the mayor and superintendent of schools. the governor commended the community for the work they're doing to make the city stronger. >> i believe the people of this city. and i believe the leadership of this city and this county. i believe that they have the best interests of their citizens at heart. and i think they're working hard to work across partisan lines to

the end of that one warm day. kind of a cool weather pattern that we are in. and right now we are well below average. 75 degrees with the cloudy skies, the wind continues to be out of the east. and we're close to where we were at this time yesterday. and right now it's in the mid 70s across northern and western areas, in the philadelphia region a little cooler in some places. washington township now holly rice town only 70 degrees. we have cool weather at the shore as well with that wind out of the northeast. and we continue to see problems at the shore. we have a coastal flood advisory that goes through 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. we have a high risk of rip current problems at the shore tonight and into tomorrow. and the wind and the cool conditions don't make it any more pleasant. the bulk of the rain is offshore, but we're starting to see more of that east to west flow with some showers moving in from the ocean. and so it's going to be wet at

times right at the shore. jersey and into delaware beaches, a little bit inland. but may not go too far inland tonight or into tomorrow. as you can see, the futurecast cloud are thickest at the shore, rain chances higher at the shore, winds are stronger at the shore. this is not the kind of pattern that's real pleasant. and fortunately we haven't had a whole lot of that during the summer, or else it would not have been such a great summer. tomorrow we break up the clouds a bit and see a little sunshine in the afternoon. then on thursday we start off dry and then a cold front approaches from the west bringing some showers well north and west early in the afternoon, but the front comes through later in the day and into the evening with perhaps a line of showers and perhaps some thunderstorms as well. then that goes down to the south on friday, comes right back up on saturday. this is one of those patterns where the front just goes back

up north and south, and every other day we have a threat of rain. tonight the threat of rain is mostly through the south and east. toward the jersey shore, delaware beaches, the rest of the area just pretty much clouds. 64 in philadelphia, 58 north and west. there might be a few breaks allowing the temperatures to get down there. cloudy in the morning, some sun in the afternoon. so the temperature will get up into the upper 70s. it could hit 80 degrees in some spots to get a little bit more sunshine mainly north and west. then everybody gets warmer on thursday ahead of that front. could be close to 90 degrees with high humidity. thunderstorms late in the day or at night. then we cool down and dry out friday. the rain comes back saturday. then we cool down some more and dry out. then the rain comes back again next tuesday. today the steamy side of politics. >> there is one man who is getting more attention than the candidates. >> he served in the peace corps

new information this afternoon about a record rise in greenhouse gasses. the united nations weather agency says carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere reached a record high last year.

on passenger etiquette through a new campaign called dude it's rude. the initiative takes a direct approach to getting riders thinking about their personal travel habits. taking a more direct approach to tackling annoying habits riders complain about like people leaving trash behind, using foul language and blocking the front aisle. dude it's rude ads have been on the public timetables for a year now. decals, posters and digital messages will appear on vehicles. cepta wants riders to focus on the message and not the messenger. in a statement it says "customers appreciate our efforts to tackle the issue that bug them such as seat hogging." a mother fights for her daughter's name. >> that's our top story today on nbc 10 news at 4:00. today nbc 10 news talked exclusively to the mother and sister of christina raguster's, the woman on trial for kidnapping and sexual assaulting a little girl. raguster's's mom says her daughter did not do it. also the actor in the ad

of. regusters is charged with kidnapping a child from her school and sexual assaulting her. speaker for the first time, regusters's mother told nbc 10 the person described in court is not her daughter. and listening to the graphic testimony she says has within difficult. more than 24 hours after video of the alleged ray rice elevator assault was released, nbc 10 is still trying to find out how the football player qualified for pretrial intervention. we reached out to the atlantic county prosecutor to see if he had ever viewed the surveillance footage, but we were told he was not in the office. more troubling news for atlantic city's casinos today. trump entertainment resorts filed for bankruptcy today. the company owns trump plaza which is scheduled to close in one week and trump taj mahal which officials say could close in november. today warning notices went out to the taj mahal employees. it would be the fifth casino in atlantic city to close this year. a respiratory virus is sickening kids across the country called entero virus d

helping the campaign when he appeared in this political ad. but this was removed after it came to light he acted in the film "breeding ground". part of the plot includes kidnapped women being raped. tom wolf's campaign made this statement "we did a partial vetting and this did not emerge, but it's disappointing this has become a distraction." >> can you tell us when you learned about his previous involvement in the film industry? >> on the internet last night. >> reporter: i tracked down republican governor tom corbett in philadelphia today promoting natural gas. on line i found the first connection about beniak and the ad and film surfaced on the movie director's facebook page where he posted a trailer of the flick and wrote "i much prefer his performance in this video than the tom wolf one". >> my comments have nothing to

do with the ad. my comments are the movie. and i haven't seen it. but from everything i describe debase women. and that is absolutely terrible. >> this a major political misstep for tom wolf? >> i think it's a hiccup. >> reporter: political analyst and crisis management professor jeff jubeleel says both sides are digging up as much information about the opposition as possible. >> i think this is just the appetizer for the main course that's coming in october, in the rest of september and october. this campaign is going to get nastier. >> reporter: i did track down allen beniak today. we spoke over the phone. and he told me that he was friends with the director and that's why he acted in the film to help his friend out. he says that he only shot for about an hour and initially was told that his lines and his part were cut. he says he is still a tom wolf supporter and plans to vote for him in november. i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10. >> there are now 57 days until pennsylvania voters head to the

polls. the general election in the key sto keystone state is tuesday, november 4th. a lancaster man is accused of burning and beating a woman he was living with. donald hackman jr. was arrested on aggravated assault charges on friday. a woman was hospitalized with second and p third degree burns. she says hackman poured lighter fluid on her genital area and lit her on fire and locked her 7-year-old in a closet for acting out. two people are in custody this afternoon accused of snatching a purse from 75-year-old woman. the victim broke her hip and her arm. 36-year-old joshua mcfarland and 32-year-old misty riddle are being held on $250,000 bail. police say they caught up with the the pair after learning they were arrested for a similar crime in hamilton township. school board members in pleasantville, atlantic county

are discussing a state report that questions overtime pay that went to dozens of district workers during superstorm sandy. the atlantic city press reports 74 school systemw+wfv workers collected nearly $102,000 in overtime in the days around the storm. pleasantville's high school and middle school were designated as american red cross shelters during sandy. philadelphia's tourism and marketing agencies merge it could save the city at least $1 million a year. that's according to city controller allen butkovitz. he released a study today that reviewed the operations and costs of the philadelphia convention and visitors bureau and visit philadelphia. both promote the city as a destination for business and travel. most of the funding from both organizations comes from the city's hotel tax. the transformation of eastern state penitentiary into the nation's premiere haunted house now under way.

ferguson, missouri city council is meeting for the first time since a police officer shot and killed an unarmed teenager there. on the agenda, establishing a review board to help the city's police department improve community relations. michael brown's death last month sparked sometimes violent protests which prompted the call in for the national guard. an ambulance transported the american aid worker with ebola virus arrived in emory hospital in atlanta this morning. it is the same hospital two other americans were successfully treated. the patient's identity has not been released. and the ebola epidemic in west africa is spiralling out of control. the number of people believed to be infected is more than 4200 according to the world health organization. 500 new cases were reported in

caught on camera, a woman pushes her boyfriend off a motorizeded scooter, then nearly backs over him with her car. it happened in orange county, california. that woman, 47-year-old laura cox, has now been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. the video was recorded by the couple's neighbor and has gone viral. but the man at the center of it all is standing by his girlfriend, saying the video looks much worse than it is. >> do you see a mark on me? do you see any marks on the scooter? if you actually really look at the video, she bumped me with

her hip. >> he's not planning to press charges. in the castle county a woman is in custody for allegedly hitting a man with a car. police were called to the 300 block of winston avenue in elmhurst around noon today for a domestic dispute. witnesses called 911 to report a woman hit a man with a car. the man was taken to the hospital. he's expected to be okay. no word on any charges in this case or what led to the altercation. kind of cool at the ballpark last night. it's going to be cool again tonight. but at least again it looks like it's going to be basically dry. just cloudy and cool around here. we have one warm day in the forecast, not just for the week but for the next seven days. and we are tracking thunderstorms, at least for one of those days. right now we see cloudy skies over citizens bank park. still dry, 75 degrees.

that east wind continuing to keep those clouds in and keep the temperature down. also tends to keep it fairly uniform. so we're generally in the mid 70s across most of the area. 71 in mount holly, one of the cool spots. 78 degrees in dover, a warm spot. let's see how we're doing right at the beaches. that northeast wind still causing problems coming off delaware bay into delaware. and that northeast wind right along the jersey shore leads to coastal flood advisory, high tide this evening may get a little bit higher than it got last night. and the rip current risk continues to be high for tonight and probably tomorrow as well. because we got an east wind tomorrow. and the east wind bringing a few showers off of the ocean into delaware and into the jersey shore. as you can see, one little shower there right near brigantine. they're small and brief but they're there.

and the futurecast shows again just a few of them coming in overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. now, we're going to get a break, maybe some sunshine in the afternoon. and then on thursday a front's coming in from the other direction, from the west. so we start off the day dry, it gets pretty hot and humid. then here comes this line of showers and thunderstorms right around dinnertime. 7:00 this model has it right over i-95. so obviously it's a little earlier north and west. a little later south and east. and then we dry out. so friday's looking good, but the whole thing comes right back on saturday. so it's looking like saturday might be kind of wet. in the tropics, this is the historical peak of hurricane season. we're watching for any kind of development in the bahamas. this is the main quarter we're in the eastern atlantic. and that may develop over the next few days, some of the computer models are showing

dad thinks a lot about education. i'm john kane and it's about time harrisburg did too. women in the workplace. >> a new law on the book that protects moms and mothers to be. nbc 10 reporter tim furlong is live in middle town. >> explain this new protection for working women. >> reporter: it seems very confusion these federal and local laws about how mothers are supposed to be treated before and after they deliver a baby. hopefully this new law will clear things up. governor jack markell signed this into law about 90 minutes ago. it makes sure everyone knows that sex discrimination ablews to discrimination against pregnant women or women who just had a baby. employers will have to make reasonable accomodations to allow women time to bupump brea milk in a private location and keep employers from retaliating

against women who -- last week you probably remember this we told you about a delaware woman who works for the state. she filed a complaint after she says her supervisor wouldn't help her find a decent private place to pump breast milk for her daughter. sponsors of the bill say this new law should prevent stories like that one from happening. >> you would think it's common sense. unfortunately it's a lack of education. we're hoping this legislation also informs employers. i think many have good intentions to take care of their female employees but misunderstand. >> reporter: the law essentially pregnancy as they would any other medical condition. supporters of the bill also say this makes a whole lot of financial sense for everybody involved. for the mothers who need job and want to keep job even after they have the baby. and of course for employers who don't want to lose a valuable female team member. so it's a win-win here they say. they say this is really just codifying a law that should have been but wasn't always common sense. live in middletown, tim furlong, nbc 10 news.

back. monday rice was just days away from finishing a two-game suspension for this february domestic violence incident with his then fiancee janae palmer before tmz released video of the entire incident showing rice knocking palmer out with two quick punches. now he might never play football again. rice's victim is now his wife. tuesday janae rice lashed out on social media, directing her anger at both the public and media. "what don't you all get? if your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you've succeeded on so many levels." despite the plea for privacy, people continue talking about the incident. >> when the video is out there and you saw how brutal it was, the ravens did the right thing. fired him immediately. you can argue they should have done it sooner, they didn't want it. whatever the reason is, it's happening. >> reporter: many have been critical of the nfl and ravens for only taking drastic action
