support ever since, not regained consciousness over earth course of that week. about an hour ago, melissa rivers released a statement saying this at 1:17 p.m., joan rivers passed peacefully, surrounded by family and close friends. she said that her son, joan rivers' grandson, would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff here at mount sinai for the amazing care they provided and they are humbled by the outpouring of love, support and prayers they have received from around the world regarding their mother, joan rivers. as you might imagine, hollywood starting to weigh in. whoopi goldberg released a statement a short time ago, "my dear friend, joan rivers passed away. i can only quote billy crystal, there are no words, upon voyage" and ryan seacrest called rivers a trailblazer in the world of comedy. she was a comedienne, an actress, author, authored more than 12 books, many, many comedy recordings over the years and a real trailblazer in the field of standup comedy for women over

the last 40 years. that's the story live here in new york city. i'm chris pollone, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, chris. you know, joan rivers has several connections to the philadelphia area. she had been booked to appear at the borgata in atlantic city in november. >> she also had a show scheduled at sands bethlehem also in november. perhaps her biggest tie to our area is to westchester-based qvc. for years, a line offed were ducts like clothes and jewelry were sold under rivers' name. we went to the site a few minutes ago and found several products with her name there. rivers' daughter, melissa, also has ties to our area. the actress and comedienne attended the university of pennsylvania. rivers graduated in 1989. >> jim, you know, it's so ironic, just a few weeks ago, you were talking about an encounter with joan rivers. >> one i will never forget. horrified personally. i was in new york and literally ran into her on the sidewalks of new york so crowded, i brushed her shoulder and she went down into the gutter on her high heels. she lost her footing. >> you knew who it was when you

ran into her? >> i sure did. and as she reached up, i was trying to help her up and i -- i was asking, are you okay? and she looked up at me with that rwry sense of humor and said, i hope you are a wealthy man. she got up, dusted herself off and off she went. she was okay. always making a joke, always wanting to make people laugh. i think that was sort of joan river's man travel. >> exactly. >> we have continuing coverage on joan rivers' death. we will take a look back at her career coming up at 4:30. meantime, 20 minutes of non-stop news continues with this, the brink of bankruptcy, that could be the case for another atlantic city casino. this time, it's trump taj mahal. when it opened in 1990, the tv commercials called the damage the eighth wonder of the world because of its opulence. >> now, some 24 years later, the gaming hall is facing a financial crisis. jersey shore bureau reporter, ted greenberg, live in atlantic city this afternoon. >> ted, you have been looking into the casino's money

troubles, what have you learned. >> jim and renee, i have been going over the numbers, the first seven months of this year, the trump taj mahal saw its gaming revenues plunge more than 15% from the same time in 2013. talk of a possible bankruptcy is swirling, but experts say that doesn't mean this casino could be the next to close. >> come here two days a month every month. >> reporter: on this trip to trump taj mahal, mike learned his favorite casino is facing serious financial trouble. >> very sad. >> very, very sad. >> reporter: it neighbors the showboat and revel casinos. most recent quarterly report to state gaming regulate, the table warns if it is unable to achieve significant revenue increases and improvements in its operating results, the company will have difficulty funding operations. a restructuring of its business is mentioned as a possible fix. the "new york post" reports the damage could be headed for

bankruptcy within days, unless it can quickly reach a deal with its lenders. >> to me, this is an indication that they want to continue going forward. optically, however, it's bad for atlantic city it just feed hes o the ongoing negative story that could turn people off. >> reporter: according to the post, the casino had broken loan cav nants. not sure what those financial obligations might be but in the filing with the state, the taj mahal said it intended to defer payment of property taxes indefinitely so it can use that money for other business purposes. >> the trump properties, including the taj mahal have been through the bankruptcy process multiple times before. so what happens here remains to be seen. >> reporter: now, i reached out to trump entertainment resorts but a spokesman had no comment. in its report to the state, the company cited a number of factors for its financial struggles, including an extremely cold and snowy winter

as well as intense competition here and in nearby states. live in atlantic city, ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> thanks, ted. another atlantic city property with the trump name will close in 12 days. trump plaza closes september 16th leaving more than 1,000 jobless. the showboat closed sunday, the revel tuesday. despite the trump name on the plaza and taj mahal, donald trump has only a small stake in trump entertainment resorts, less than 10% and trying to get his name removed from that. there was a third trump casino, the ac marina became the goldening in net 2011. more breaking news right now, from skyforce 10 over route 55 in deptford, new jersey, an accident has now closed the southbound lanes, although we are told traffic is getting by there on the dirt shoulder of route 55. again, a crash here. not sure whether there are any injuries right now, but we are making calls, gonna get more information. have skyforce10 pull out here so

we can see a little bit more of the scene here, as traffic gets by very slowly there on the shoulder in the southbound lanes of route 55, an accident there. skyforce10 over the scene of a car crash in bensalem, bucks county, street and mechanicsville roads. police say they were following the black car you see here, it was involved in two accidents around 9:30 this morning. that car ended up crashing, as you can see here. police took the driver into custody. one other driver was?wv injured philadelphia police want to find out who killed two men in a lawn crest home. one was shot, the other beaten to death with a hammer. skyforce10 over allen grove street near east godfrey today. police got a call from the landlord who said there were two bodies in the house, neighborhood block captain tells us this is a known drug house and complained about it in the past. neighbors say they are wore with this latest crime.

>> it's scary. i'm scared. i'm scared for myself and my son, for the neighborhood. >> both victims were in their 20s and there are no suspects right now. skyforce10 over an apartment fire in north philadelphia, crews called to north 23rd street just around noon today. they checked the roof for any damage here. new information now on a florida woman arrested in the 1991 death of her 5-year-old son. 46-year-old michelle lose zin ski waived extradition in a florida court this morning, she will return to new jer is i to face the charges. she is charged with murder in the death of her son, timothy wiltsey. she had told police the boy disappeared at a carnival. his remains were found in a marshy area of edison, new jersey, 11 months later. 20 minutes of non-stop news continues, this a stern warning from a philadelphia judge to the woman accused of kidnapping and assaulting a 5-year-old girl. >> this comes just one day after a courtroom outburst from christina reg gusters.

nbc 10's christine maddela back in the courtroom today. >> were there any problems during the proceedings today? >> reporter: no, no problems, so far, so good today, but the judge did start the day off with that warning to christina regusters that if she had another outburst like she had yesterday, she would have to watch the court proceedings from a video feed. after that, reg gusters went back to being unemotional and disinterested. she shuffled papers and took notes while the jurors listened to dna experts on the stand. >> there was dna from both the little, abducted girl as well as christina reg gusters on the t-shirt, the adult t-shirt and that was the headline of the dead. >> reporter: that's tom klein, the victim's attorney the if in the civil case, he is not bound by the gag order in the criminal trial. much of today's testimony centered around dna evidence. we heard from these two forensic experts with the philadelphia police department. they tested evidence from the home where the victim was

allegedly held as well as the t-shirt the girl was found in. >> the one key piece of evidence that the prosecution is relying upon, that one shirt that this little girl was found in had the dna of the good samaritan who found her, the little girl who was abducted and christina reguste regusters. >> reporter: regusters' defense attorney argued the dna expert does not pinpoint exactly when or where reg gusters' dna got on the shirt. reg gusters is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting the 5-year-old in regusters' home but regusters' defense attorney brought up the lack of the victim's dna in that house or under the bed where the girl was allegedly held. >> the defense in this case made a number of points that there was no dna of the little girl anywhere in the house, that all of these other items tested and no dna. >> reporter: the prosecution is expected to call more witnesses to the stand tomorrow. i have been in touch with regusters' defense attorney all day. he said he will take over on

monday, but he said he hasn't decided if reg gusters will take the stand in her own defense. a tell wear student is the victim of a violent robbery. newark police say the 18-year-old victim was walking area of kept way and college avenue. two men came up to him, one suspect tackled him to the ground and a second punched him in the face. the second grabbed the victim's wallet, stole cash and ran away. the victim walked back to his dorm and called police. if you have any information, you are asked to call newark police. a park ranger attacked the love park took stand today at the preliminary hearing. this video shows that ranger being wasn't, mocked and spit on during this incident in august.

septa a big payout in exchange for market east station between 10th and 12th streets in east philadelphia will now be called jefferson station after the hospital nearby. it happened this morning with the tug of a curtain, the name market east is no more. from now on, conductors will call out a new name at the center city train stop. >> next stop, riverson station. all aboard. >> reporter: thomas jefferson university and its health system shelled out $3.9 million for the five-year deal. most of the money goes directly to septa. >> we try at septa to make sure our revenues can cover our expenses as best we can. this is a great way to do it with these naming rights. it's something we want to pursue in the future. >> reporter: the money is well spent, according to the hospital, which hopes the name change will boost its visibility, getting more patients through its doors. to make sure that happens, shuttle buses will soon be sitting outside, waiting to whisk riders off to any of the jefferson facilities about three

blocks away. >> whether they don't own a car and use a subway as their means of transportation, whether coming from the suburbs, for obvious reasons, don't want to get in their car, or coming from south jersey or delaware can say get me to jefferson station and from that moment on, we take care of it. >> reporter: philadelphia councilman says there are plans to revitalize the gallery shopping mall next to the newly named station. >> this place in three or four years is gonna look nothing like it looks today. >> back in 2010, you recall septa got $3.4 million when it sold the naming rights of patson station to at&t. some believe suburban station could be next to get a new name. a new look for the heart of center city today. the renovated and revamped dill worth park was dedicated this morning. >> three, two, one. >> all right. [ applause ] >> mayor michael nutter a i long with city state and federal officials cut the ribbon on the new park this morning. the goal is to make the park a

centerpiece of the city. it will link the avenue of the arts with the ben franklin parkway and connect the office district with market east destinations there are new entrances to septa's trains and trolleys and all rain water is being recycled to fuel the new fountain and irrigation. dill worth plaza at city hall is now officially dill worth park. the $55 million renovation project started back in 2007. there's a new cafe as well as a fountain that's programmed by a computer. >> they have created an iconic gateway to transit and to septa and what they have done is reconceive, re-engineer and refashion william penn's original center square, but updating it for the 21st century. >> there are two more days of special events plan ted park, including picnic lunches, happy hour special he is and family-friendly activities much the new park will even feature winter ice skating. now to the latest on the jersey jam a port authority police lieutenant with ties to governor chris christie met with the executive who allegedly

ordered the lane closures on the george washington bridge last fall. lieutenant thomas michaels told investigators he gave this man, david wildstein, a tour of the traffic around fort lee on september 9th. michael's told investigators that wildstein called him the week before and asked him what would happen if three lanes were reduced to one. michael said the closures were for a traffic study. meantime, new jersey's capital city, a debate over residency requirements. >> city council will decide if non-residents can hold high-level city jobs in trenton. nbc 10 south jersey bureau reporter cydney long live outside trenton city hall and it seems they are having problems attracting workers who currently live in the city? >> reporter: renee i that session actually the case. the city of trenton says it is finding itself in this position because it's having trouble finding qualified, educated or well-trained employees for these specific positions. now, we are not talking about across the -- across-the-board city jobs here in trenton,

talking about high-level executive positions at the head of departments on or about a pay scale close to $105,000. >> you have to be happy employee. if you're not happy, you're not gonna work. >> reporter: former interim mayor of trenton and southward councilman george muschal says trenton is suffering a workforce/manpower problem right now and it is the right people in top level positions to head the city's departments. >> we are talking about director positions for which departments? >> you got public works, fire, police, human services. >> reporter: michele plans to vote in favor of residents living outside city limits to fill the vacancies, something that hasn't been allowed since 1972. >> like the water department, qualified people working the water department and need special qualifications and found out they didn't have t when i was mayor, i opened the flood gates and says we are taking all applications for people for different jobs and believe it or not, nobody applied.

>> i was able to see trenton when it flourished. >> reporter: as council takes up the vote tonight, residents like susan carmichael livingston fear it will send a message that trenton is not a safe or good enough place to live and will worsen the problem of foreclosure and run down properties. >> the city should try to revamp vacant homes and get decent people in them. that will cut down on the drugs and crimes in this city. >> reporter: the vote, which did pass on its first reading, 6-0, with one abstention here at city hall, a few weeks ago, must also have a majority vote here tonight. council will meet at 5:30 and i will be upstairs in the chambers listening to this conversation, we will bring you information on just which way the vote goes just as soon as it happens, and of course, what it all means for the capital city. live in trenton, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news.

a nice looking day, nice looking, pretty decent in the feel, but that heat and humidity, that is going to be returning tomorrow and into saturday. we are tracking some thunderstorms, going to affect us over the weekend. the question is will they be gone by the time the eagles play? right now, we do have temperatures well up into the 80s. the average high is 82. we are 85 now, south-southwest wind, 48% on the humidity, humidity not too bad, going to be way higher tomorrow. the temperatures generally in the 80s across the area, 78 in the poconos and it's definitely a little bit cooler right at the beaches, we have seen a seabreeze again in and gonna see seabreeze he is the next couple of days, so, some nice relief from that heat and humidity right at the shore. not much in the humidity going

up, that may lead to some cloud cover and make even a couple little sprinkles as we go into the morning hours. but one or two showers developing during the afternoon with the heating of the day. then, we've got more serious issue. there's a cold front that's going to be moving in on saturday. ahead of it it's going to be hot, going to be humid, and here comes some showers. just a few early in the afternoon and then potential line of strong storms coming through the lehigh valley first and through the i-95 corridor, then down toward the shore, that's generally between 4 and 10:00, depending on where you are. it's not gonna rain for hours, but it could come down really hard for a time and also, a lot of lit thing, too. gusty winds. but by sunday morning, we are

drying out, just in time for the eagles to play. and some real nice conditions, the humidity way down, the temperature way down, getting fortunate with the timing for that. because if they were playing on saturday, it would be really steamy for football. now, at the shore, i think most of saturday is okay. gonna get a bit of a seabreeze, of a wind, not until the evening do i expect the showers and then it will be cooler as we go into sunday and monday as well. for the rest of the night, we expect low clouds to form, late tonight, fog, 71 the low in philadelphia, during the day tomorrow, hot and humid, a chance of a shower popping up, the main issue going to be heat and humidity, may feel like it's about 97, 98 in parts to of the area and then, well, temple and penn state are going to have to deal with the heat and humidity and then the thunderstorms move through late saturday and

skyforce10 above the action as demonstrators made up of workers and religious officials protested low wages. in new york city today, fast food workers left their jobs to rally for higher pay. hundreds of them from mcdonald's, taco bell and wendy's rallied through times square. home health care workers joined the protesters. in detroit, more than 100 protesters mash muched through the parking lot of a mcdonald's shouting slogans and blocking the drive thru lane there. detroit police arrested several people who took part in a sit-in across a busy road. fast food workers and supporters are fighting for a $15 an hour wage and the right to form a union. currently, the federal minimum

wage is $7.25 an hour. that works out to about $15,000 a year for a full-time worker. on labor day this past monday, president obama mentioned the fight for higher wages. a speech in milwaukee, he said "if i were busting my butt in the service try industry and want and honest day's pay for an honest day's work, i'd join a union." the national restaurant association stayed in a statement that the protests are an attempt by unions to boost their dwindling membership. fast food chain owners call $15 an hour unrealistic. today, mourning the death of an american comedy legend. >> joan rivers has died. the 81-year-old passed away at a new york city hospital this afternoon, a week after she suffered a heart attack during a procedure at a doctor's office. our coverage of the death of joan rivers continues with a look back at her career on nbc 10 news coming up at 4:30. and also this, the age argument, she won the miss delaware pageant but a wrinkle is keeping her out of the miss america pageant. today, nbc 10 asks if she will

now back to the breaking news we have been following all afternoon, the death of comedy legend, joan rivers. rivers' family says the comic passed away in new york city after complications from surgery. she was 81 years old. well, the second time in recent weeks, the entertainment world lost a comedy legend. >> mark barger takes a look back at the comedienne's life and her prolific career. >> some people will do anything not to have to speak to ryan seacrest. >> reporter: joan rivers enjoyed recent fame tweaking red carpet royalty but for 50 years -- >> can we talk? she was a tramp. >> reporter: she was a star. doing a job once dominated by men. standup comedy. >> that thing you're not supposed to talk about outrageous. >> reporter: the block lynn native's no-holds-barred humor got america's attention in 1965 with an appearance on "the tonight show" with johnny carson. >> i had been working eight

years in greenwich village and nothing, and he said irk god bless him, you're gonna be a star. changed my life. >> reporter: rivers became a standout on the standup scene and a television fixture, even filling in frequently for carson. >> they all thought i stank, you were the first one to say you're funny. thank you. >> reporter: carson and riff hearse a bitter falling out in 1986. >> joan rivers! >> reporter: rivers became the first woman to have her own late night talk show and it was in direct competition with carson. >> what's under the kilt? >> reporter: rivers' show only lasted a year. soon after, her husband, edgar rosenberg, who had been the show's producer, committed suicide. the loss strained rivers' relationship with her daughter, melissa. >> it's always been about you. it always will be about you. >> reporter: they eventually co-starred as themselves in the tv movie about that dark period. >> we absolutely could not find our way back to each other for two years. >> reporter: but once reunited, the pair worked together frequently on reality television. >> i wanted more from her. >> reporter: most recently,

remember the story, miss delaware told she was too old ton miss delaware technically by a couple of moments. as ms. america, at the continue the jersey shore, came to the university of pennsylvania to find out how the former and possibly once again down the road miss delaware is holding up. all things considered, she seems to be doing pretty well. >> good evening, my name is brittney lewis and i am miss delaware. >> reporter: brittney lewis is representing delaware in atlantic city, but she wasn't the first to wear delaware's crown this year. you still think you believe you're miss delaware? >> absolutely. i did win. >> reporter: amanda longacre won't be watching the pageant sunday, she says she should be in it. she won miss delaware but had her crown taken from her after state officials realized they made a mistake on her paperwork and technically two months older than the age limit allows. >> it really hours. >> reporter: her story and tears made international news, she did get her scholarship money back, she is suing delaware officials for money and her title but even a win in court won't get her to atlantic city in time for this year's pageant. she is now focused on getting

her master's degree in social work at the university of upcoming internship with the delaware. she has nice wishes for all the women competing this weekend. she just says she won't be watching. >> and i don't wish badly on the competition at all. i have been good, i know it's bringing a lot of good economy to atlantic city and they are in dire need of it now. i wish i could be there but unfortunately, circumstances say otherwise. >> reporter: amanda longacre filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit against delaware pageant officials, she also want hearse title back, take a while in the could, not going to be certainly in time for the miss america contest this weekend but down the road could have it on her resume. at 5:00, get the thoughts from the woman who took over as miss delaware. interesting what she has to say, you will see that at 5:55. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. a philadelphia firefighters's recovering from some minor injuries right now after fighting this house fire happened at 52nd and haverford street in west philadelphia

you plan to buy e-cigarettes in philadelphia, you better taken a identification card inside the store with you instead of a warning. retailers selling e-cigarettes to minors will be issued tickets. the law went into effect last april prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes to anyone under the able of 18. now, penalties will include a $250 ticket for illegal sales and as digs a.m. $250 ticket for not checking i.d.s from anyone who appears to be under the able of 27. the rate of adult obesity increased in six u.s. states last year and more states than ever, 30% of adults are obese, that's according to a report by

a new jersey high school marching band has been followed to stop the music. >> the neighbors who live near the band's practice location say they are just too loud. the marching band controversy happening at brick township, ocean county. nbc's ida siegel has details. ♪ >> reporter: they are called the marching must tax and they have been winning awards for brick memorial high school for deck kids at. last night, in the middle of practice, the police shut them down. >> it's terrible. we are treated like a second-class citizen and we are being told we can't practice, we are making too much noise. i mean, it's a matching band. it's not noise, it's music. >> reporter: last night, they were rehearsing in their normal spot, this smooth parking lot with painted lines mimicking the field, but residents who live about 200 yards away told me tonight the music is very loud. ♪ so they called police. those residentses did not want to go on camera but they say

their children can't sleep at night. jake plays the tuba and was crushed to be told he had to go home. >> we are a highly competitive marching band and without practice, we don't get anywhere. >> reporter: the brick police released a same today saying there was some confusion last night and they have met with school officials, worked it out, a new schedule, new locations, but the band members and the band parents say that solution doesn't work for them. >> i just think it's not fair and i think they deserve better. >> reporter: the other option given to them is this baseball field, which is not lit and pitch black. parents also say it's too bumpy. >> you don't have a steady surface, it's gonna end badly. >> reporter: rehearsing on the football field itself, which they did tonight, is great, they say, but they can't use it when the football team needs to be here. >> my son is not a criminal. he is involved in a very top-notch marching band. we couldn't be prouder of our kids. >> reporter: parents say something else has to be worked out so these kids go on making their community proud.

right now at 5:00, the death of a comic legend. comedienne joan rivers died this afternoon inside a new york hospital. her death comes one week after she suffered a heart attack during a throat procedure. she never regained consciousness. nbc 10 national correspondent, chris pollone is outside mount sinai hospital in new york city where rivers died less than four hours ago. >> chris, are more people gathering there since you last joined us? >> reporter: yeah, keith and jacqueline, the amount of people out front continues to grow here outside of mount sinai hospital, both in terms of media and well wishers who are coming by who want to know what all the fuss is about and expressing support. we have seen the outpouring of

support for joan rivers and her family pouring in from all across the country as the word spread that she did indeed die this afternoon. her only child, melissa, made the announcement for a news release around 3:00 this afternoon. in it, she said that the 81-year-old comedienne passed away around 1:17 this afternoon, eastern time, surrounded by family and close friends here at mount sinai hospital. the rivers' family thanked the outpouring of support from people all around the world who offered love and prayers over the past week or so and comedienne whoopi goldberg among those offering her thoughts.
