"Cavalcade of Stars": The Schaller Brothers (Trampolining act)
- Publication date

Clip from "Cavalcade of Stars" featuring the trampolining act The Schaller Brothers. Pretty typical of low-budget DuMont Television Network, famous for airing anything which moved. But like much DuMont progamming, this clip is surprisingly entertaining and shows that TV doesn't need a big budget. This also shows The DuMont Network's love of vaudeville-type programming.

The Schaller Brothers were remarkably entertaining. I just noticed that John Schaller lived until 2007. It seems as if it's a much older kind of act, given the extreme amount of polish they have. I love vaudeville acts.

Several decades ago it became "hip" to put down vaudville type television programs. That is a shame. I miss that terribly. I hate all these TV shows these days that try to "educate" me and the folks doing it have no idea what they are talking about. Acts such as this usually brought their own music with them and the band's job was to play it correctly. The pressure was most on the drummer who had to make the clues with the movements of the act whether it be dancers, singers or whatever. One mistake and it is all screwed up. These guys are really grand to see.

Subject: My Dad
Subject: My Dad
The clip shows my Father Ramone Kenith Schaller aged 23 with his elder half brother Johnny Schaller. The Schaller family had been in Variety since at least 1893. We have a copy of a programe for Tony Pastor's Company advertising; "The comic acrobats The Schallers. The famous knockabouts." from that date. My Granfather did an act, then booked high wire acts for the state circuses and eventually ran one of the 1st prop hire company's to a newly emerging Hollywood film business. My Dad's the guy with the hat. To answer a previous reviewers question on how he kept the hat on. It was very tight, he'd shrink the leather liner with water till it was skin tight. My Dad performed the act till the late 1980's. The music stayed the same and most of the tricks with the addition of another where he lost his trousers whilst bouncing and then somersaulted off the trampoline into a new pair of trousers being held by his partner. Johnny retired from the act due to a back injury. Dad then worked with a Frenchman called Gilbert and then an Irish high diver called Ricky Poole. The act toured the world many times over and performed at 2 Royal Command performances.

In this clip, we have two guys in suits taking turns performing a trampoline act. One of whom also wears a hat for nearly the whole act. While they perform their act, we hear a big band performing music that is coordinated to the act, although we never see the band itself.
The act itself seems to be well polished and flows smoothly from segment to segment without a hitch anywhere. It looks like a circus act that they've done a thounsand times before.
At the end of the clip there is a partial commercial for Johnson and Johnson.
