disturbance overnight in san jose. it happened on santa teresa road or in that neighborhood kron four's will tran been on the story for us this morning. joining us now live with the very latest on the situation. >> well, >> police officers are still on the scene and when it's all said and then they could be here throughout the morning and into the afternoon, making it more than 12 hours after arriving to this location. you can see the mobile command unit right behind me. there are dozens of police officers taking over this area. now, let me give you a little bit closer to the scene. officers. they are focusing on 2 areas, one in front of one building and the other in the parking lot. so they've been walking back and forth pretty much throughout the morning. looking for evidence, hoping to talk to witnesses. they actually arrived here at 10, 30 last night. me show you video of that. it was a disturbance call to san jose police officers came here and this is in south san jose off

of but no road they went to the extended stay america. it went up to the 3rd floor. they wanted to talk to somebody, but they had no idea that all of a sudden shots would ring out. we do know that 3 people were taken to the hospital. 2 of them officers. so the breakdown is the suspect in the hospital after officers returned fire. that's it. that suspect life-threatening injuries. another officer also still in the hospital. life-threatening injuries. but the good news one other officer treated and released. a lot of people were inside the extended stay at the time. i managed to track down a woman. she thought she was dreaming. it was anything but a dream. >> and then all of a sudden about 2 later. and and and i'm like, okay, i thought it was my friend or my daughter's friend. i go to the door to yell at them. it was a like what's going on. there will yeah, protected. like

everybody you what's going on? shelter-in-place looking door, stay down into the low as you can. all i could see was blood and blast outside the room. so i don't know if it was in the room or in the hallway. i know that there's one lane out and one way out and you have to have your key and everything checking through. >> she said that it all unfolded on the 3rd floor that actually it was about 2 hours later when the officers circle back after they were just inside their room, didn't know what was going on with the chaos just outside of their door that the officers told her and other guests that it was an officer-involved shooting. again, 2 officers rushed to the hospital. and we do know that one officer life-threatening injuries. so this actually unfolding at 2 scenes. one here at the hotel, the other at the hospital. i'm sure many officers. they rushed to the hospital just to find out the condition of

is pretty clear for the most part, 14 minutes to get into the city. the san mateo bridge is a 16 minute commute over that the richmond sandra fell bridge. it's a 9 minute commute over into the north bank and that golden gate bridge is a 20 minute commute into the city thiskmorning. i'll send it back to you. i'm michael. >> 904, is the time in the east bay. police have arrested a hair stylist accused of disturbing crimes conquered. police say that the owner of chief hair salon committed several assaults, including rape kron four's. dan thorn has more. >> investigators say this conquered hairstylist. 41 year-old cheat who has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault. the allegations include rape, unlawful intercourse and lewd acts with a child. police say who committed the acts inside of his business on clayton road in concord. my reaction is just, you know, ab so

absolutely disgusting. victoria por 10 ye was a client of who's who says he did good work but sometimes exhibited strange behavior. pertain ye is also a therapist who feels guilty for suggesting others seek out his styling services and for families who may have been victimized. i think i'm a little bit in shock right now about the children are kron. 4 went to the salon thursday afternoon and a woman who appeared to be a worker refused to talk with us when she was leaving and locked the doors behind her. investigators believe there may be more victims than children's lives will be ruined forever. >> and the trauma is unspeakable. >> vu is still in custody on $275,000. bail. concord police are urging anyone with any more information to come forward in concord. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> 906, is the time in the north bay. a second lawsuit has been filed now against benicia unified claiming the

school district swept teacher abuse accusations under the rug. so the new lawsuit, which is similar to the first one looks to hold the district accountable for hiring former teacher matthew shelton. the suit filed by 3 additional u.s. claims. the district failed to report shelton's alleged abuse of students to protect its reputation. shelton is charged with 7 counts of molesting a child. he's due in court for a preliminary hearing on monday. well, teachers in campbell are asking leaders now, the campbell union high school district to use money to keep staff from leaving. the teachers say with the area's high cost of living an ongoing teacher shortage, the district really can't afford to lose any more teachers. >> so i can hope that the teacher can for the district reverse the teacher people were gathering to express our displeasure with the district's 0% salary and their unwillingness to consider

incentives for teachers who are servings are most vulnerable students. >> well, teachers are also calling for smaller class sizes and improved classes for english language learners. >> happening today, san jose city officials are kicking off a new program to revitalize the downtown area. they're launching 5 new pop-up shops at 5 vacant stores. it's part of the city's storefront activation program, which they say they hope will reduce commercial vacancies and improve public safety. all 5 pop-up shops are women owned the ribbon cutting ceremony happens at 10 o'clock this morning. >> well, new data from the local police department shows that violent crimes have actually dropped recently prom force to stu impacts the data and looks at what still needs to be improved upon. >> i think it's definitely too early for us to be celebrating where we're not resting on these early numbers. we're feeling encouraged by the numbers. doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. take a look at the latest data released by the

city. the chart shows homicides are down by 17% in 2024. compared to 2023. >> assaults dropped by 4% and assault with firearms dropped 21%. rape was down. 21% overall violent crime is down in oakland by 33%. >> definitely attributing to implementation of the cease-fire strategy. >> doctor joshi credits several programs including cease-fire coming back into the fold. >> the police department's side of that relentless 13 looks like enforcement. but the department of violence prevention's relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like getting them on track. inspiring the behavioral changes needed to prevent further victimization. the data >> is not all positive, though. robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. robbers have climbed 11% and residential robberies 100 and 18%. so sad.

>> to me to see my city in the shape that is is that that's bishop bob jackson with acts. gospel church. he says some community members are declining to call the police for help. adding despite the data, he says they fundamentally don't feel safe in oakland. the reality is is it's where the people live. >> and the people that i talked to an open and i talked to quite a bit. they do not feel safe and this in their city or in their own homes. >> many variables of drugs and gangs and the hot summer and unrest and and what have you that the numbers could could skyrocket. james deadly, a criminal justice professor at san francisco state university and former san francisco police deputy chief says while data shows a downward trend now it doesn't predict the future. >> and that can be troubling. in the meantime, joe, she says that they will continue to work hard and help oakland become better.

>> we are back 9.14. is the time as again. take a live look outside this morning on a friday where we're enjoying blue skies and just good signs for happy friday. yeah, but some i mean, it might not last yeah. think the fly in the ointment for this weekend. john is saturday. good morning. yeah. right in the middle of the weekend, things are looking a little funky compared to where they've been lots of sunshine lately. and this morning we've seen sunshine for most areas, including san francisco. >> little cloud cover along the coastline, though skies are dry al day long today tomorrow. not so much. that's our storm system that we've all got our eyes dropping in from the gulf of alaska. it's a cold one, too. unseasonably late, low snowfall in the sierra and a lot of rainfall considering we're now in may for the bay area. as i mentioned, though, today is going to be consistently dry one. so definitely get outside today. take care of everything you need to get done overnight. tonight we'll see

cloud cover increasing couple of sprinkles here. and there right in the middle of the evening. most of our rainfall arrives predawn hours tomorrow morning and some pretty solid showers at that arriving throughout your morning hours on saturday itself. so don't plant a whole lot outside tomorrow unless really like those showery conditions. this is what normally you would see for rainfall for the entire month of may right here. we're getting this all in just one day's time tomorrow. the sierras also getting a solid dose of snow. winter weather advisory going into effect 11:00am tomorrow for elevations as low as 5,000 feet. this includes lake tahoe as well as 70 on over to mammoth lakes of those popular destinations in the sierra. be ready to go with the chain's, the snow tires, and for some slick in cold conditions, travel delays are possible with half a foot to a foot of snowfall above 7,000 feet in elevation. and at the very top of the sierra could see isolated amounts even higher than that. definitely impacting your travel on 80 as well as highway 50 on donner

pass and echo summit. as for today's daytime highs, it's still a very pleasant feeling day. little cool at the coastline. a lot of 60's to upper 50's for coastal areas. elsewhere in the bay area, though it's upper 60's to even upper 70's for warmest of temperatures. little cooler than yesterday was, but still a very pleasant feel. fremont at 72 pleasanton at 74 walnut creek. 76 degrees. hottest of areas, antioch in vacaville, all the way up to 79 degrees today. looking ahead tomorrow, a full 20 degree cool down for a few spots. we may stay chilly into sunday for cinco de mayo, but at least we're clearing and drying back out and next week will gradually see those temperatures climbing back to the 80's by next thursday. michael, thanks, great day to go sailing on sunday. >> taking a look at our roads this morning. everything looks fairly good for the most part. it's been a good friday. have to say taking a look at drive times right now, most are under 30 minutes. you can see livermore to dublin. 11

minutes, dublin to fremont 14 minutes. san leandro to milpitas. 38 minutes milpitas to sunnyvale. also 8 taking a look right now at the antioch to concord drive. you're looking at 18 minute commute and taking a look at westbound 80 crockett to the maze. it's only 17 minutes. once you are in that area. if you decide to take the richmond, sandra fell bridge. we've got a seven-minute commute there. you can see very little congestion and that bay bridge looks wonderful as those cars drive through with a 12 minute commute into the city of san francisco. taking a look at 8.80, a little bit more southbound, those southbound lanes, oakland, 2 to 38. an 11 minute commute there and taking a look at the dublin to fremont drive. we've got 14 minutes their last. we'll take a look at that san mateo bridge. and that is only a 15 minute commute on to the peninsula. i will send it to you, stephanie and james. thank you. michael knight, 17 is the time. >> and the city and county of san francisco now has been accused of dumping almost 2 billion gallons of sewage into the bay environmental

protection agency has filed a federal complaint against the city yesterday. they're alleging that the city dump more than 1.8 billion gallons of stuff, sewage into creeks into the bay into the ocean. so which contains diseases like e-coli as we know it can cause severe illness. the epa also says the sewage is interfering with not only water recreation, but also activities to protect aquatic life. well, bay area air quality officials are also now accusing tesla of persistent air quality violations. they say the company's emitting harmful contaminants into the atmosphere. those chemicals they say are coming from the paint shop at tesla's fremont facility. officials now seeking an abatement order that would require tesla to come up with a plan to lower those emissions if it moves forward, the public will have a chance to attend hearing. that comment on these alleged violations. >> the first thursdays are officially back in san francisco. check this out last night was the first of 12 monthly block party scheduled in the city. these are called

downtown first thursdays and thousands of people. as you can see were in attendance. there. second street was closed to vehicles from market to howard. the event featured vendors live music and a whole lot of people. >> the reason why this is important is because we need to get people to create new memories downtown, to remember how close it is and how easy it is to get there and how much there is to offer for folks. >> this festivities wrapped up at just about 10 o'clock last night. so actually not too late. all things considered the san francisco being a pretty big city. >> all right. 9.19, is the time in new this morning. air bnb has unveiled some new features that are supposed to make it easier for people traveling in a group sounds intriguing and the company is diving into pop culture with new homes and experiences called icons are rich. demuro gives us a look. >> at an event near hollywood, airbnb introducing new features to make group travel easier and new places to book

>> and we're back at 9.24. developing news this morning. tensions are growing at u c berkeley where pro palestinian demonstrators are coming into conflict now with israeli supporters. the palestinian supporters say that they've been negotiating with the university, but neither side has come to an agreement yet and that would end this occupation that we're seeing on campus among the demands -f those that are protesting. they want the university to financially divest from israeli interest and condemn what the israeli government has been doing in gaza. they also want students and teachers to be able to speak freely about the conflict without fear of punishment. as for the actual encamped outside sproul hall things there have been largely peaceful. that was up until wednesday night when someone stole an israeli flag from

counter-demonstrators and then that led to a fight. >> person not from the site signed a kind of approach to design is group in. so students formed a line between the 2 groups tried try to keep tensions down. but still the person managed to grab a israeli flag and talk on so there was a little scuffle as they fought to the >> well, the university police department says that there was confirmed there was attempted robbery of a flag and the physical assault that happened around 7 o'clock wednesday night. 3 people were injured in all. we did reach out directly to the university about this incident. and in a statement, they said that their police department is currently investigating, but that they do condemn violence of any kind between protesters and counter demonstrators. >> meantime, more than 5,000 uc alumni from all 10 campuses signed a letter pledging to stop donations. the letter asked university officials to divest the u.s. military and rather divest from the u.s. military and companies profiting from what they are calling israel's oppression of palestinians.

another nice and comfortable one, even for the sierra nevada. it's looking a little bit like spring and summer lately. a nice day up there at lake tahoe. this view is going to look totally different. come tomorrow with snowfall expected at lake level and especially if you're there heading up there on i-80, and highway 50. so get read the return of winter to the sierra. as of right now, we're nice and dry out there. but to our north, we're starting to see showers drifting into the pacific northwest and that same rainfall will make its way down our direction tomorrow. today, though, a very pleasant one. calm winds this morning will be a bit breezy at the coast later on today. temperatures are already rising under all that sunshine and we'll continue to rise into the afternoon. berkeley and oakland, each sitting in the upper 50's concord at 61 novato 63 degrees right now. later today, it's all about the 70's. no 80's today, but getting close in a few spots. i'll talk about our big cool down tomorrow as well as the arrival of rain. still ahead, michael. >> hey, good morning. everyone will taking. excuse me, taking

a look at your roads this morning. at 9.30, things look fairly good. for the most part we are seeing some residual delays over to traffic collision on southbound 8.88 in union city. that's right. near the all dorado niles road that has since been cleared. but you may still see some of those delays as you're heading southbound this morning, taking a look at the bay bridge. everything is clear there. 13 minute commute into the city this morning. those metering lights are not on currently. and taking a look at mateo bridge. we've got 13 minutes on to the peninsula. taking a look over at the richmond, sandra fell bridge. it is a seven-minute commute. there. lastly, that golden gate bridge coming in at a 20 minute commute, which is fairly normal for this time of the morning. i will send it back to to live at the desk. >> all right, michael, thank u k 9.31. is the time and happening tomorrow. a concord based comic book store plans to give out thousands of free comics as part of their annual event. you sounds like fun will flying colors. comics has been in the community for more than 3 decades, but their time at their current location has sadly run out. kron four's

philippe to go with the story. >> the countdown to free comic book day will culminate with a big batch of flying colors, comics and other cool stuff in concord saturday. it's may the 4th be with you. star wars so there may be some characters from a galaxy far, far away. will also be an emotional day for joe field and his loyal customers who have been shopping in his store since it opened 35 years ago. >> his lease is up at the end of the year and he has not been offered or renewal. we hope there isn't a closing date. we hope that there's more of a transition day and that's what we're working towards as field explores options to settle down at another store front. he is proud of what his business has brought to the community how the comic book event. he found 23 years ago has spread worldwide. >> andrew has been purchasing comic springfield, most his life. joe's fantastic. and he does so much not even just for that story. and he does a lot for the local community as well. and although this chapter of flying colors will

soon come to an end. >> field is optimistic about the businesses future, which he says will not be limited to the web. our community is built by people coming in and being here and being a part of what goes on. >> i don't see the smiles if its online and i that's what feeds me to besable to make people happy and do that in person. saturday's event starts at 11 o'clock in the morning and runs through 7 o'clock at night. here at the store front. >> on treat boulevard in concord, philippe djegal, all kron. 4 news. >> well, meantime, ihe richmond, san pablo, cinco de mayo parade, which was scheduled for saturday, has been postponed because of the rain that john's been talking about for that day, the parade planning committee said with the weather, look at the way it's going to be. they just felt it would be too unsafe to hold the parade. but don't worry the festival on sunday is still going on as planned because as john said, it looks like that is going to be great. the parade. it's going to be postponed until september.

>> cinco de mayo preparations are underway in the south bay and san jose. police are taking a different approach that the after facing some backlash last year in 2023, law enforcement blocked off highway ramps near the parade over concerns of potential vandalism inside shows. but some of the community called the closures and the reasons for them an example of cultural and racial bias. >> opportunity to talk to the public about some things that occurred last year that we want try remedy this year. we have a couple of closures that are going to curl. that includes only one freeway off ramp closure, which will be 6.88 king road will be on may 5th specifically for a parade. that is the situation i did that we have anticipated preplanned freeway road closures. >> the department plans to close down barack obama boulevard and west santa clara street for a car show from 09:00am to 04:00pm tomorrow and also taking place. that same day is the salsa festival. that event is causing a one-lane closure of south market street surrounding plaza de cesar chavez from one to 09:00pm. in

an update now to a story we first brought you on the kron 4 morning news on thursday morning. scary moments for a woman and her daughter who found themselves caught in the middle of a cross fire in oakland. now police are working to find out what led up to the shooting and who is responsible. we spoke with family of the victims. >> pretty scary knowing that she was in his accident. i my daughter actually in the car while the gunfire was going. yeah. from what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove off. >> it all happened near 98th and cherokee thursday morning near bishop o'dowd high school. the woman's husband tells us that she tried to drive away, but their suv was hit by another car, flipping it onto its side. as you can see there, the woman and her daughter managed to crawl away from the vehicle. largely unharmed. they were taken to a hospital as a precaution. police are investigating but have not identified any suspects or a motive yet. >> well, a redwood city police

have arrested a man suspected of harassing a teen girl while she was walking home from school. police say 46 year-old neal porous drove up next to this 14 year-old on clinton street and asked if he could hit on her. he also asked if she could come closer to his car, she did not. in fact, police later tracked this person. thanks to some home security cameras in the area that recorded his vehicle. so porous has since been arrested. now on suspicion of contacting a minor with intent to have. alameda police are warning residents about a scam that's been targeting recent applicants for permits. authorities say the scammers are pretending to be from the city. they're calling these victims and requesting that the permit fees be paid on the phone right then and there officials say the city never calls applicants to request payments over the phone. if you do get a call like this, contact the city because you're likely being scammed. >> and the push to crack down on so-called junk fees now extends to dining under a new

california law. restaurants will no longer be able to charge customers, surcharges or service fees. that same law also prohibits hidden fees related to online purchases such as concert tickets or hotel rooms. businesses are now required to disclose all charges ahead of time. the new law takes effect july first and does not ppply to taxes and government fees. national small business week apple launched its first ever made for business series highlighting small business owners. the event kicked off at apple's union square location last night. it was streamed around the world. the first business to be showcased was the filipino fusion restaurants in your 6, 8, co-founder evan kundera was joined by golden state warriors hype man, franco finn to talk about how the popular food truck grew to a brick and mortar restaurant. coderre said he's thrilled to be recognized by apple on this global scale, especially at the beginning of api heritage month. it's not you know, i think we're here right in the middle of san francisco in

union square. >> this is not only like a a worldwide event, but it's obvious all also the first. >> the first of its kind. so we're kind of like, you know, warm enough for everybody come after u.s.. >> apple plans to highlight other small business owners at stores throughout the month. >> well, the city of san pablo has named fien us pizza. the city's small business of the year. the spanish how pizzeria is located on 23rd street. they've been there for more than 3 decades. 36 local shops, in fact, were nominated representing excellence in local small business. but congratulations again to the scene us pizza. well, now to a story we brought you here first on kron 4, speaking of pizza nearly a month ago, we met this little guy who was an abandoned chihuahua, found living under a round table pizza up in nevado and the people at the animal shelter who took a man named him papa roni because of that. and after kron 4 shared his story, the actual owners of that roundtable came forward to adopt him.

>> and we're back at 9.56. and again, the breaking news we're following this morning comes out of the south bay where we have those 2 san jose police officers that were shot last night in the line of duty. has been released from the hospital. the other those still being treated this morning. we're told that officer is in critical but stable condition. those officers were investigating a disturbance at saint ignatius avenue when they came upon this person that they we're trying to interact with. but one point that person took out a gun and opened fire and that's when they returned fire. and all this went down at about 10, 30 or so again,

bay. 2 police officers shot while responding to a call in san jose. this was in the santa teresa neighborhood and that's where kron four's will. tran is standing by with the very latest on the investigation and the conditions of those officers will. >> well, we do know that one officer james was treated and released the other officer at last check still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. i mean, they came obviously with bulletproof vests. they wear underneath their uniform and get these 2 officers were still hit by a suspect inside the extended stay america right behind me, james, more officers are actually arriving to the scene. now we are close to 12 hours after they arrived and they are still here throwing more recent. it's to it. we do know there will be a news conference at 1 o'clock this afternoon. so this is what's going on right now. let me get you closer to the scene. officers are focusing on 2 locations. >> the front of one building as well as the parking. s
